True that. But who honestly expects the majority of US citizens to want to overthrow their government anytime soon? All people are unhappy with their politicans decision from time to time, but you still have a long way to go before entering a dictatorship.

And in the unlikely case that a revolution took place, I doubt there would be a place easier to quench it than the states. With, or without an armed civilian population. With so long distances, and the government having the possibility of shutting down all communications with the exception of amateur radios and the sort, a revolution I doubt would get of its initial stages before the isolated sparks where stomped out.

Doesn't matter who exects what. Its the principle of the matter, the USA is a nation founded on freedom from political tyranny, and as a part of the package we are to be equipped with the means neccesary to do so. The USA government may be strong, but it is strong in part due to the people. You can claim that because our military is so powerful, any revolution would be pitiful, but you must remember that most US soldiers are duty-bound to the nation, not the government. The Captain America sort of approach. The President, Congress, the Supreme Court, all that can be wrong, but our ideals can never be wrong, and it is the dedication to these ideals that would, in theory, allow US citizens to rise against tyranny in the unlikely event it happens.

Most soldiers with a hint of backbone, American or not, wouldn't willingly kill their own people if they did a justified rebellion against the government. The thing is, the grunt on the frontline doesn't know much apart from what his superiors tell him. What if they were told from the big boss on top, with the flag they had sworn loyalty too waving fashionably in the wind behind him, that the people they are about to exterminate aren't rebels who have finally gotten feed up with a dictatorship masquerading as a democracy, but dangerous terrorist, threatening the very foundations of the country they love? That's the way all dictatorships trough history have managed to stomp out rebellions, trough twisting the truth and turning brother on brother.

This is of course purely theoretical. Can't ever see that happening in the foresable future. Luckily.

I'm sure plenty would in fact follw such orders. But not all. And I would hope if there was a third American revolution, that it would be handled with more civility than most revolutions. You don't take your weapons to the man first off, that makes you a terrorist. The weapons are to protect yourself when the man sends HIS GUNS after YOU, and from there you build momentum to stop it.
