Fatty, Fatty, Boombalatti...

Okay, despite the thread title,

I'M NOT MEANING TO INSULT OR MAKE FUN OF FAT, OR OBESE PEOPLE...

I'm just wondering, though...why are so many [American] people so damn fat nowadays!?

When I was a kid, my elementary school had for lunches:

Taco Bell (Monday)

Subway Sandwiches (Tuesday)

KFC Chicken Littles (Wednesday)

McDonalds burgers/fries (Thursday)

Dominos Pizza (Friday)

and we weren't obese, diabetic, or had hypertension...

Though in fairness, we had no internet in my day, and I walked home from school a lot.  We had no Red Bull or any other energy drinks, either.

I'm not trying to blame the internet specifically, there's other factors making folks fat.

Feel free to put in your thoughts on this...

All the illegals took the farming jobs around here, which is what I wanted, and none of the warehouses are hiring.

I try to run, but I don't get the ime to since my schedule changed

Kids and people in general don't exercise nearly as much as they used to.  Lots of kids nowadays, instead of going outside and getting exercise stay at home and socialize on the computer. When I was in grade 3 or 4 before there was such a thing called the World Wide Web myself and most of my friends played sports and did stuff outside.  My old elementary school had a jogging program at recess that involved doing laps around the school with prizes and ribbons at the end of the school year for accomplishments and milestones achieved. I see no such thing in today's elementary schooling system. :/ Furthermore poor eating habits play a role in today's society more then in the past...all the fast food conglomerates and mega corporations will do anything for your buck by loading their food with more preservatives , fat, sodium, sugar, calories etc

Also, to an extent, technological advances in general over the past 20-30 years have made people less physically active.  Back then the economy was more physically based then it is now with the prevalence of the service industry.  A higher % of employees have office/cubicle jobs and it's often these people who are less physically active.

Lucky!  My elementary school had occasional food days and when I got into grade 5 and 6 they had hot dog days every Friday with chips and pop.

Same, except when I got into grade 5 my private school was too far away to walk home.

And the reason is mostly because Americans are living more relaxed live, much less manual labour required. Most of today's jobs require button pressing than actual hard work. Much less the fattier diets, and lazy lifestyle.

Sorry to hear that.  We got a similar problem here in cali.

Very good point(s).

Yeah, more efficient machines means less physical work.

Yeah, we were kinda lucky!

Fast food does make you fatter. I've been eating a lot more of it than I should lately (my lazy ass hates cooking), and I know I've gained weight. That much trans-fat is not healthy.

I think you guys have hit the nail on the head already.

Greater technology leads to less physical work.  This is the biggest factor, since fattening food has always been around.

Technology has replaced past active habits with less active ones.  Examples:

The remote control lets us change channels without having to get off the couch.

The elevator and escalator allow us to change floors without having to manually climb stairs.

The scooter eliminates the need to walk long distances.

The internet allows us to do all sorts of things without having to travel at all, such as shop, communicate, and see other places remotely.

With the sharp technological curve we are shooting up right now, I see this problem getting much worse than it is already.

The only way people can really stay healthy now is to set time aside from the schedule to exercise, since physical activity is not integrated into people's schedules today like it was decades ago.

I do not have a fat problem. I never

'go fat' as some people happen to.

However, I am physically weaker

than most of my classmates.

Guess you can not have it all.

Yeah.  True.

But fatty food + inactivity = overweight or obese.

I used to be overweight, because of the crappy medications I took in school.  When I kicked the meds 9 years ago, I lost that weight.  Sometimes kids and adults take crap medications that slow down the metabolism, and that's not good.

Where is that button? I use it all the time ...ah! Here it is.

Wrong!

...sort of.

The real issues are 2.

1- Information Econamy.

These days, machines and the like make our lives easier, safer, longer. As such the rise of technical work. "Sweat and grunt" work is no longer common, and what is left doesn't pay well and is thus left to foraigners and/or robots. It's rare for people to go hungry (in the west) which is a good thing.

2- Stigmatisation/Elitism.

Racism? Bad. Homophobia? Bad. Sexism? Bad. Fat-ism? Fair game.

Yep, I'm saying it. People want to discriminate, to feel they are better then others, to shun the outsider. Skin colour, sexual preferences, gender, all are now seen as bad things. The next acceptable target is fat people, as most assume it's all because of greed. This is wrong.

Someone mentioned fast food. Notice how there is talk of regulating McDonalds and Fish shops, but unhealthy hippy or posh eating is left untouched. Also notice how those pushing the anti fat agenda are vegan, rich or 'fit' people. You never see joe plumber on the news saying "Yeah, we gotta ban the kebabs cos they are killing the kids yeah?"

You all make valid points. I think another less obvious thing is the media being responsible. I mean, of course we hear constant stories about the poor health that America's youth are in, and it's more and more prevalant. But the thing is, that's how a lot of the news is in general nowadays. People are researching anything and everything and now with all the news channels and other news outlets, it's very easy to exploit all these "proven facts" into news ("Researchers have discovered that certain bottled waters might be making you fat. Tune into to News 3 tonight for the full story. You may think twice before buying your next bottle.") Years ago, it wasn't so in our face how everything is making us unhealthy.

Also, a lot of people buy into these stories. Not only that, everything is either getting recalled, unsafe, causing swine flu, resulting in child death, etc. nowadays and there are millions of people who have panic reactions to this (i.e., my own mother) so that suddenly, they're not letting their children go outside, let alone go to the park, or encouraging their kids to walk or ride their bikes places, or do other activities that were common place not too long ago, simply because the news made a report, or a magazine printed some "shocking" article. Killers, rapists, abductors, and other criminals/sociopaths co-existed with us from day one, it just wasn't constantly reported in a media frenzy. Nowadays, people are too afraid to let their kids do anything that puts them "at risk".

I'm basicly saying fat people are the new black people. ie. Acceptable targets for bullying and hate.

I hardly move, but I eat right (and by eat right what I mean is I'm to cheap to buy myself a burger ect), and I'm... underweight. As far as obescity, I blame it on a mix of metabolism, not eating right, an lack of physical activity. If your parents are fat, then chances are you will be too, cause of that there metabolism passing down.
