Legalizing Marijuana?

If this thread is too hot to touch and has to be locked, I understand.

I hear that Marijuana can be used for medicinal purposes, cancer survivors, aids patients, glaucoma sufferers, etc., have all benefited from marijuana use.  In many states, Marijuana dispensaries are open, and it is legal to buy or use MJ for medicinal uses.  It is believed that MJ is better than several pharmaceutical drugs used especially by cancer patients, they have reported that the MJ was better than the [crappy] pills that the drug companies push onto them.  That said, those pharmaceutical companies push to ban marijuana, using their money, their politician puppets, their smear campaigns, lies, and fear/scare tactics to edge out marijuana, and to force their pharmaceutical drugs onto cancer patients.

Also, in the 1930's or so, William Randolph Hearst of the L.A. Times ran a smear campaign against hemp, because hemp was set to replace paper for printed reading material, and Hearst wanted to protect his timber industry interests.

The cotton industry, textile industries, all work to outlaw marijuana, not because they care about protecting the people, the children.  No.  It's so they can protect their interests, while hiding behind the guise of morality.  Tobacco cigarettes are more addictive than heroin, yet cigarettes are legal.

I think pot should be legalized, as long as it's only sold to person(s) age 21 or older, taxed, and it's still against the law to drive a car or operate any heavy machinery or motorized vehicle while under the influence of MJ.  In Cali, if you get caught with under an ounce of marijuana, and it's not medicinal purpose use, than they confiscate it, but they can't arrest you or press charges.

Seriously though, it's a case of idealism v reality. Idealy all drugs would be legal. That would make them clean and competativly priced. In reality people can't be trusted, and would kill themselves and others.

I would:

1] Prosecute and arrest/execute drug dealers

2] If it can be used for non-addictive medical uses,

    then limitedly legalize it, but make it so only

    people under medical prescription can have it.

3] Ban it's use for addictive purpuses. E.g: Smoking.

I believe that the problem most people have with marijuana is that they only see the bad effects, caused by what it's laced with, which is done by the dealers. I've heard a lot of different opinions/facts for and against this argument, and the only conclusion I can come to is that it should be legalized, but only the pure weed itself, any drug suspected to be laced with other substances should be confiscated and the dealer/user arrested. Heavy regulations. And of course a sin tax, like we have on drugs and alcohol.

Did you know that in my state, it's illegal even if it's medicinal?

It should be grown domestically, for all uses.  Part of the bloody drug war in Mexico that has killed thousands of civilians has been the smuggling of marijuana into the U.S. to feed U.S. demand.

I think it should be made legal.

I had a friend once who's mother had MS and Lupus. She was in pain constantly, and her doctor hinted and basically told her to get some weed to ease her suffering, and she was so, so thankful, hehe.

Also, making it legal will take away the rush you get when you have it and you know you shouldn't have. People may start to "unsee" the novelty of it.

Also, it's relaxing. And we're a stressed out generation.

Legalize and Regulate. It solves several problems:

1. Reduces crime by reducing growing costs (it can be grown like any other crop and doesn't need to be hidden, which is expensive) and allowing commercial entities to flood the market, driving the street dealers out. (seriosuly, how long do you think it would take Phillip Morris to start rolling ciggaweeds?)

2. reduces prison populations, saving states money

3. provides a tax revenue stream for cash-strapped states

4. Elimination of laced product, as regulations would likely prohibit it.

As my mother and a few of my older peers have told me that Marijuana is the main drug patients at home recovering from injuries use to relieve or ease the pain on their bodies from their last surgeries, or from aftershocks of them.  Personally, I don't have a problem with it in that it should have been legalized A LONG time ago.  I guess the government is too stuck up in keeping it away from everyone due to kids getting into that stuff.  If it's for patient or doctor's orders, then by god use it; keep it from the kids, though.  It's bad enough woth kids my age are getting into all sorts of trash, like crystal meth and weed...  Makes no sense...  Wasting your lives for nothing.

yeah, I agree.  MJ is not even that bad for you, I tried it once before in Jr. High, and then again a couple of years ago.

Actually, a relative of mine from the town I stayed in most of the time during my visit to the US told me an interesting story about this. This was a very conservative town mind you. There was this guy who walked into one of the local watering holes(read: bar) and started bragging that he was getting drugs legally this way. He was out of state, and just on vacation there. As soon as he said that, the bartender told him to leave. Something which backed up by all the other guests encircling him with angry faces. He left the bar, knowing there were several others he could go to instead. He wasn't let in at any of them, as the word had spread.

Myself, I have somewhat of a dilemma with drugs, tobacco, and to a certain degree, alcohol. Personal freedom to do absolutely everything you want as long as it doesn't hurt the next guy is something I stand 101% for. But, I also hate the mentioned drugs with a vengance. The point of a beer with mates I can see, as well as a quick sip of wine along with a good meal for those who like that kind of stuff, but the rest I find to be just incredibly, incredibly stupid and pointless.

I'm sick of the hypocrisy and scare tactics the government uses to try to ban MJ.

American wastes billions of dollars fighting "the war on drugs", yet spends billions more dollars creating a desire for drugs from a fatherless, welfare/WIC raised, youth population.
