DZComposer
The 50s were a time of conformism. McCarthyism was in full swing. If you didn't like the way someone acted, all you had to do was find a way you could call them a commie. The US was on an economic high during the 50s, also. Remember: Europe was destroyed by war. That's not something that gets fixed in 5 years, it took a couple of decades. The reason it is looked upon as a golden age is because it was a pretty conservative time, and the conservatives are very very vocal right now.Things got better in the 60s, when non-conformism became cool. Sadly, the boomers forgot about that and grew up to be tight-ass greedy SOBs leaving our generation to deal with their shit. Generation X didn't help, either. They all drank the Reganomics Kool-Aid that led to the current mess we're in.

Robert Monroe
??? (sorry, a bit confused here)The generation that grew up with Reaganomics is the one thats currently in power. Reagan did a lot of good things, but the economy was not one of them. Our recesssion is in part because of that, and in part because the 90s were so financially secure that we became laaaazy. Asper Sarnoff
While I didn't experience them, I'm willing to bet there was one thing about the 50's that were generally better than it is now.The people. I believe that facing difficulties, as long as not a life in complete missery, helps forms people into better beings. The "what doesn't kill me, only makes me stronger", or nicer in this case. And see as in the western world it's a heck of a lot easier to live a good life than it was 60 years ago, I believe that has to some extent had a bad effect on people, generally making them more spoiled, lazy, spineless and unable to appreciate the simple, good things about living.Oh, and cars looked a lot better before. They were worse, but looked hell of a lot better.
Star Fox Runner
Just like any era, the 50's had it's ups and downs.I for one wouldn't like to have lived back then, the main reason being the tension between the Soviet Union and the West which was in full swing in the 50's. The Red Scare and false accusations of communism destroyed a lot of people's lives. And when the Chinese got involved in the Korean War, things got bad for America there, the Chinese just swarmed over the border after us.Thanks to the Cold War, the latter half of the 20th century was a pretty scary time. Anyone ever hear of the Cuban Missile Crisis? That was the closest we've ever come to an all out nuclear war.

During WW2 'them' was the nazi, during the cold war it was comies, with no clearly defined 'them' then people go after those who are different another way. They go beyond racism into xenophobia. The main issue with America I think is the ego. Let's face facts. America, it's a pretty nice place. Everything is modern and cheap and the people are free. It does have issues though. So you can understand how irritating it is when ever american keeps chanting "Were number 1, we're number 1! WOOOO!" and demanding, and often assuming the whole world works, or should work under american values. When we see team america world police, we go "Yep, thats america."
