Sapphire
GET BACK ON TOPIC OR I'M THROWING YOU RUMMIES OUTTA HERE!! What's a rummie? And no wheels, otherwise it wouldn't be called a hovercar
Asper Sarnoff
The kind with four fans, which are more like small, personal planes than hovercars, have been on the drawing board for ages now. The one closest to being released onto the public market is the Moller Skycar M400. Google it up for a closer look. I've got to say, around 100,000 USD doesn't sound to bad really. That's how much one would have to buy for a normal, family car with a V6 engine over here. Still wouldn't sell alot, and I honestly don't really want drivers which I often see can barely handle a normal car become airborne. And as far as direct gravity manipulation, which is basically the hole grail of transportation, just short of actualy teleportation, the technology has a long, long, LONG way to go.Here's what I think would work. They put magnets in all roads at close intervals, and the same magnets on the car, with the same polarity. That way, the road magnets would repel the car magnets, keeping the car upright. Then all ya gotta do is throw in a jet engine or something and off you go! I love crazy ideas. But apart from issues such as actually funding such a system and thousand other small details, another thing that strikes me is that a magnet has always two poles. What will then happen when someone is going to do a barrel roll? Or pass over/under someone else?It must however be said, a similar system has been in used since 1984 with great success on trains. ARWINGCOMMANDER 3987
I was thinking more of a hovercar that doesn't fly but still doesn't need wheels. Then again, what about something like the Moller Skycar M400, but with the option to keep it's elevation down to only 3 feet above the surface of the ground or water? CrypticQuery
That's my other problem with it.If we did have flying cars, imagine all the accidents with all the power lines, buildings, etc. Once you smash into something, you fall. It wouldn't be pretty,

Guest Julius Quasar
Or the self-lacing shoes And so was the movie!YES. I'm tired of having to tie my shoes!I agree with all those statementsBack OT, I'm sure we have technology to build hover cars, but the world governments and elite establishments hold them back from us, along with laser weapons, beautiful/sexy robot/android wives, lightsabres, flying cars that run on non-fossil fuels, jet-packs, and robot servants. That sort of stuff would make mankind happy if they had it, and the world governments and elite establishments don't want you to be happy. Pricks. Guest Julius Quasar
why would we ever need hovercrafts...?"It will be the end of all tires, shock absorbers, 4 wheel drive vehicles, tire pumps, road maintenance, speed bumps, and 'Severe Tire Damage' spikes..." Seriously, though, I just bought a set of Bridgestone tires for my '95 Mustang, damn those were pricey.
Star Fox Runner
I hate to be the killjoy here, but a hovercar really wouldn't be practical.By floating in the air like it does, it's basically in a frictionless environment. It would need to have some kind of jet coming out of all sides to make it go in the direction you need, or there is nothing to stop it from careening out of control. So while the idea is cool, it isn't practical because it would be hard to control.
