Coming out of the Closet (Furry Edition)

It seems from previous posts, that many people here have issues with telling people that they were a furry. I'll be honest. Fox McCloud? I find hot. Krystal? You know it. It is hard to come out and tell people that you aren't the same, or "Normal" to your own views. I cried myself to sleep the night I told my sister. I felt a hating sensation towards her. Especially with her and my brother-in-law's view on gay ideals and the the idea of them, cause for the longest time, gay anthro canine pictures got me going. Once she was able to accept me for it, which came with time, it was the best feeling in the world. Sure, still a bit awkward, but it was a great start. Have I told everyone I know that I find these things attractive? No, but I am going to soon, because it needs to be done so I can start accepting myself for who I am. And yes, it is hard to do that. But it all starts somewhere. You just need one person to tell. And I don't want to hear anyone say that they don't have one person to tell, because that is a load of crap. Even with my screwed up life, friends, and issues, I was able to come out to my sister. Also, You have this whole site to tell, There is more than one person wanting to help.

My point? People do need to tell someone, it might seem stupid, but it helps by starting for acceptance of themselves, even if it is just a phase. I am Nick, and find anthro fox's attractive. If you feel like you need help excepting, or want to post your views on the matter, or anything related on this subject, go ahead.

Being a furry doesn't necessarily mean you think anthro beings are attractive. In most cases, such as mine, I just think they're something special that makes them more interesting, not in a sexual way that is, than the equivalent 100% human being. Whether or not it originated from an overdosis of Disney movies at a young age, or I just like the possibility of using animal traits within storytelling, I don't know.

In any case, I've never tried to hide that I'm a furry. Never revealed it to someone in real life, because they haven't asked. But if they did, I wouldn't have anything against standing up and giving a long lecture about me and the subject.

I understand that completely, but I did this cause I hear how it is really hard people just to say they are a furry to others they know, so I wanted to show that even if you are more than just that, it will get better in the end.

I try not to tell anyone I know in real life but people end up figuring it out anyway somehow. >.>

What I like about SoCal, we're a standoffish society, we don't know who's what, we don't care, either.

If you're furry in So.Cal, people either don't mind, don't know, or don't care.

Or I just end up...you know...dropping ridiculously obvious hints.

Ooooh how WRONG you are... There have been a few instances during my years of studying in college where people have openly either dissed furry, or otherwise indicated that their notion of the furry fandom  is somewhere in the realm of "freaks who have sex in costumes and/or whack off to porn with animals in it", and they are obviously a bit weirded out by it. Then again, I've taken a lot of art/animation classes, so the demographics there are skewed a bit more in favor of people having knowledge of furry. But I think the same rules apply everywhere, So.Cal is no different.

I'm having a hard time trying to tell my family that I'm a furry. The only thing that they think about furries is true is that stupid CSI episode. That is full of stereotypes! I have a a lot of friends who know I'm one and it doesn't bother them one bit.

I don't have many people irl to tell I'm a furry :S

I don't particularly hide that I'm a furry, I just don't openly announce it to everyone I meet. If someone asks if I'm a furry, I tell them the truth (usually after asking what their definition of the word "furry" is though, if it's the whole dress like mascots and have sex thing, I say no, and say I am in that I like anthropomorphic animals) Though I am thinking of getting this shirt, which will announce it for me.

I never understood this whole coming out thing. I know it's a different culture, but really, other then your pairents (who want grandkids) nobody cares.

That said I would leave the furry part out of it. If people might react badly to you being gay, I really don't think telling them how you like it will help matters. It's like saying

"I'm gay ...also I like being bound in leahter while being whipped."

...wait a second. What am I doing? Im sopposed hate gays. Grr Menace ect ect ect.

It's not me being gay. It's me being into Anthro Foxes in general. I don't know what to classify myself right now, and still, not my overall point. I was just saying this because with the whole DRl issue, people are saying how they fear to tell people they are a furry, even if not like me, who cares. I am trying to say it will turn out alright, and life will look a bit better on you if you can do it.

I had no idea what the hell a "furry" was before coming on to this forum, let alone know the whole culture of it. Who knew, I always just thought the whole anthro-animal thing was part of Star Fox's uniquity and nothing more.

For the record, I'm not a furry at all but just like anything else I don't care if others are. To each his own, as long as you're not an asshole.

In my opinion, being a furry just means that you like the concept or art style of anthros. Then you can be any different degree of furry.

I don't care about telling people I'm a furry online, because I know there are furries here, and they won't judge me. As for real life, a couple of my friends know, and they don't care, though they poke fun once in a while. I don't openly proclaim it either unless a situation comes along where it would make sense to tell it.

Just like Trekkies have the stigma of being considered fat geeks with no life and no girlfriends, Furries have the stigma of being considered sex freaks. Everything comes with a drawback, but you gotta get around it and live like ya are. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't have the right to tell you how to live anyway, so they can just shove it.

The thing is, most people do consider furries to be either gay or people who do it with animals.  O_o So, announcing that you are furry is...difficult, because everyone who knows would automatically think of you as a gay person who dresses up in a mascot costume and does it with animals. My friend thinks it's weird just that I'm a fan of Starfox. :?

There is a degree of truth in this though in that virtually every single major poll done on the fandom as a whole by furries in the last several years (either online or at cons) has the majority not being completely straight (i.e. gay or bisexual)

Okay then...awkward...

Well, I REALLY can't tell anyone I'm a furry now...

Using that logic, you can't tell anyone anything about you if you happen to be a minority. :P

Not every non-furry knows about polls of that nature and a sizable minority of furries are perfectly straight.
