Is James Fox's instincts?

I know. I've played that level like 2,000 times. Why don't you think Fox asked James some questions or anything while they were flying?

Well, he was trying to escape before he got blown apart. Also, his dead dad is flying him out of the tunnels, I'd be too shocked to talk.

i lol'd so hard.....but i agree....the whole exploding tunnel......and I think hearing "You've become so strong Fox....." would be enough for me.....my real dad is gone...and if those were to be the only words i can hear from him.....then i would be perfectly content (note...he has been gone for many years....so please no need to comment on it  :P)

I 'lol'ed at that. Thanks for making my day.

I think I understand what you are trying to get at. But the way I see it, the game ends up contradicting itself yet again. Think about it. After constantly hearing Peppy quote James and telling Fox to be like him...

[ex: "Follow your father's example, Fox"]

...we finally get to hear James himself tell Fox, "Never give up. Trust your instincts." It sounds a little weird if you think about it. If Fox is in fact creating an image of James in his mind in order to boost his confidence in a tense moment, then why would he be telling himself that he has grown so much since he was younger? I think it sounds a little silly to tell yourself to listen to your own advice in a life-or-death situation. If anything, that only tells the gamer that Fox is not as emotionally stable as they once presumed and that he can be broken quite easily.

I guess that is consistant with SF Command prolouge?

Well, I think that that since Peppy is always quoting James on his quotes like 'Never Give Up, Trust Your Instincts', that Fox has got that into his mind that that's something he would always dream of hearing James saying that for himself. So when Fox is like scared to death cuz Andross has blown up and the tunnel is beginning to collapse. His Instincts actually do kick in like Peppy has always told him to trust, so his instincts form a figure like James in order to show Fox what his instincts is trying to tell him. So when Fox is following James, James is actually Fox's instincts, so when James is flying out, going in the direction he is going, the way he goes is Fox's instincts. Anybody get what I'm trying to say?

I agree....i think it is for any child who has lost a parent to want to hear them say "You've become so strong..." that maybe at that moment.....Fox thought he heard James say it...but then again...I think James is hiding somewhere...lol j/k

Well, he could also have been affected by the black hole, but somehow escaped. He might just be "glitching" through time, either that, or his respawn is lagging, and he keeps getting spawnkilled
