Any viruses lately?

Ugh, go another damn virus today! I think I got rid of it, but this time, I am scanning my system three times a day. I was nuked with 4 different Rouge Antivirus software that caused these annoying pop-ups every 5 seconds. But thanks to the help of the internet, and Malwarebytes, I was able to suppress the virus long enough to do a quarantine and scan. The programs were:

Security Tool

Antimalware Doctor

Antivir Pro (That was how it was spelled.)

And another one that I forgot.

Either way, they were not fun as it was hard reading how to get rid o it with those annoying pop-ups.

(copied from TheStarfoxForums.)

I was too lazy to type something else. So, if you had any problems, post them here.

Get an AV.

Get Firefox.

Get NoScript

Get Malware Bytes.

You should be pretty much prepared for anything.

Thanks for the suggestions of NoScript and Malware Bytes :P.  For a free antivirus, Avast is perfect :P

Are they saying "This program [anything.exe] is a worm/trojan/virus that is stealing credit card information."?

No, I don't put Credit Card information on my Computer, but it does keep pulling up a pop up that says Microsoft Security Essentials has detected # potential threats.

Malware bytes should fix those. Boot your computer (assuming it's Windows) in safe mode, and go download it to a flash drive if you have one. Then boot it again normally and run the program from the flashdrive to ensure no corruption and it'll more than likely find and remove the viruses and malware for you.

Yep, Malwarebytes is my personal best friend. It helped me a lot today. Time for the third scan.

Ok, if you would please instruct me on how to do this in detail please.

From a document I saved: (By the way, I forgot exactly how to go into safe mode, but it's one of the F keys on startup IIRC)

I recommend booting into Safe Mode first.

Step 1.

First, go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php and download Malware Bytes. The file should be "mbam-setup.exe".

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE IMMEDIATELY. CLICK SAVE AS.

Plug in a flash drive or an SD card, and drag and drop the file "mbam-setup.exe" to the flash drive/SD card. Now, let's say your flash drive is at F:. Drag it to the F: folder.

Step 2.

On Windows XP: Go to Start -> Run -> cmd -> Enter.

On Windows Vista/7: Go to Start -> in that box on the bottom, type "cmd" without quotes -> Enter.

A big black box should come up looking like (it doesn't have to be!!):

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:UsersBionic>

You're good.

Now type the drive letter of your flash drive/SD card, then a colon sign. Like in the example, "F:". Then hit Enter.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:UsersBionic> F:

Next, should look like this:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:UsersBionic> F:

F:>

Now type "mbam-setup.exe" without the quotes, then hit Enter:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:UsersBionic> F:

F:> mbam-setup.exe

Step 3.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Keep hitting Next til it's installing. When it's done, Finish. Exit out of the Command Prompt.

If it pops up saying the database was updated, ignore it.

As soon as the program launches, click "Perform quick scan", then "Scan".

This could take anywhere from a min to an hour. Be patient.

I can't go into detail any more since I don't have malware on neither my laptop or computer, but I will say it'll open a log file and tell you there are (or aren't) infections. Close the Notepad log file.

Hit "Main Menu", then go to "Quarantine". Click "Delete All". You might need to reboot. After that's done, you're good to go.

You mean Malwarebytes...

If it is by some chance Malwarebytes, do a quick scan, not a Flash Scan.

Other than that though, it would have to be the virus.

Use Commonsense 2010

This, lol.  I rarely if ever get any viruses because I watch what I download and what sites I visit.

Yeah, that shouldn't be happening. You did everything in safemode, yes?

Well, I have not been downloading anything lately, and the only sites I have been to were YouTube, SF-O, My Forums, ArwingLanging, and Runescape over the past month.

EDIT: My virus has been gone since 3 P.M. So those sites will have to be investigated.

Recently, Malwarebytes went payware. They have a free version, and a pay version. The free version isn't as good as it used to be, sadly.

But, honestly, instead of relying on upteen numbers of freeware tools, just bite the bullet and get a full AV product. If you don't want to pay for one, get MS Security Essentials. But, I recommend either Kaspersky or BitDefender. They constantly are at battle for the #1 spot in the AV rankings. You can get a Kaspersky full suite license for 3 machines for around $80. That's less than $30 per machine, so it ain't a bad price. You have to buy it from Kaspersky Lab, though. The Kaspersky products sold by Best Buy are not the same. Their licensing is handled by Best Buy, not Kaspersky Lab.

I get the addon Web of Trust for Firefox. It stops a page with a bad reputation from loading completely and warns me about it. Haven't gotten a virus yet!

Ha, I got that one while Steve was here. Annoying little bugger. I loved when we were trying to find it with my scanners, while it was scanning, it would pop up random porn sites, but it wasn't able to view them because it had disabled my browsers from viewing the internet. xD It was great.

Glad it's long gone, though.

Kaspersky Lab?  Cool, thanks!

How do I contact/find them to get their product(s)
