Silent Hill and a cup of tea, anyone? (CONTAINS SPOILERS PAST PAGE 2)

I didn't want to go off-topic in Catwing's topic, so I thought I'd start this!

So, Silent Hill. We all know it to be terrifying, spooky, creepy, etc, but it's also deep and if you pay enough attention, you can learn a valuable lesson from it. And I don't just mean "Goddamn, when shit goes down I'm better off not answering the phone then posting the creepy doll through the letter box at the risk of getting my arm ripped off!" That doesn't actually happen in the game, but it's something that would make you think of Silent Hill if you ever saw it happen.

My favourite Silent Hill is Silent Hill 1. I played it first when I was 10, and that was also the year it was released (1999). I loved it instantly, although because I was so young I sort of just "played" it, you know? I didn't get absorbed into it. Then I replayed it at 15 after remembering how awesome it was, and I realised then that there was much more to this series than shooting deformed creatures. So I hunted down all the games of the series, and well... Let's just say it's been a huge part of my life ever since. One person even called me sad when I was out one night because someone was like "Yeah I'm stuck at the piano puzzle and blah blah" and not only did I tell him the solution (yeah I have all the solutions memorised which is why I can play them through so damn fast now) but I was able to explain stuff about the game that made everyone think that I looked into it too hard. Yeah. I felt ashamed, hehe, but at the same time I was smug because I was like this really spooky fountain of knowledge.

I've only been able to talk about Silent Hill on my level of interest with a few other people, I'm not looking for massive in-depth conversation here though so don't worry, haha! I just want to know what you guys think. :)

Is the Silent Hill games good? I've heard some things about Silent Hill...copying Resident Evil?

No. Just no. They are two completely different experiences. I love RE as well, deeply and truly, but nothing can touch on the atmosphere of a SH game. You should try playing it. They are so different I can't believe anyone can say they're copying each other. They're both survival-horror, that's it.

What I heard of it is go half an hour, kill a monster, go another half an hour, kill one monster, go an hour, kill another monster.

Wat. No! There are several minor monsters scattered around the town, and you have your boss fights, yeah. But you also have to solve puzzles, put 2 and 2 together to figure out what happened to some person that's crucial to the story, and sometimes the game doesn't even tell you what to do. You just have to stop and think hard about what you need to do, and go to the location you think of and hope that your hunch was correct.

Not to mention all the side-quests which contribute to the quality of game ending you get. You have to earn your happy ending, if there is a "happy" one available.

Never did actually stop and play the Silent Hill games, and judging by your description, I'm regretting that :P.  Since you are the fountain of Silent Hill knowledge, wanna give a basic plot synopsis of the first game for a newbie? :)

DO I?!

Okay: This is the basic plot for Silent Hill, released 1999.

Your character is called Harry Mason, he's a lovely, mild-mannered chap who has a daughter called Cheryl. You also learn that he was married, and sadly, his wife passed away. Anyway, you're driving along and (I won't spoil the intro for you) wind up in the town of Silent Hill. And Cheryl's missing. So basically, your objective is to find Cheryl, but as you very quickly discover, there is something very, very wrong with this town.

I can tell you more but then there would be no point in you playing it because I wouldn't be able to stop myself. :P

The first one is for the PlayStation, the rest for them are on PlayStation2, except Origins, which was on PSP, and Homecoming which I got for PC.

Ok, I don't plan on getting a PSP anytime soon, so I'll have to wait on Origins.

It's not a game I would push you to play too soon, enjoy 1, 2 and 3 first. :)

That's a very good video you found there Dublinfox. :D It's very quick and basic, but that's a good thing because it's enough to draw people into the series. Hell, it's just made me want to play them all over again. :D

I liked the movie too. But that may be because I'm a total fangirl, I'm not sure. But in all honesty, my friends enjoyed it too and they don't play Silent Hill.

^

I always usually like having games in their physical form, but the Playstation Store is quite convenient when it comes to things like that :P

Me too actually, I like knowing I actually own the game, and I collect them and then proudly put them on display.
