Me too actually, I like knowing I actually own the game, and I collect them and then proudly put them on display.

Nothing will replace good ol' packaging! :P

Silent Hill?  SILENT HILL??!??!

I love this series!  Reason being is for the dark tone and atmosphere it plays throughout the game and the first one had that feelings (Especially when you had to fight the last boss).  I liked the first one, but I love the second one better because it was more...  Freakiesh.  I mean, you would walk along the streets of Silent Hill, your radio starts to static up, and soon you see a sihlouette of a creature with no arms walking like a mental kid.  When I first played the game, I started to walk backwards saying, "Oh, nonononnonononononNONONONONO!!!!"  It really creaped me out when you first walked into that building and saw like a figure on the other end of the metal bars, then after you saw a guy with a hole in his head, you walk in the next room and see Pyramid Head raping these other weird thingies.

My only reaction the whole time was, ".......................whoa........................That's messed up......."

I haven't played the newer ones, but I plan on getting Homecoming when I get the chance (And I DID this afternoon, but I bought Mass Effect 2 instead) cause I saw gameplay footage of it and all the endings.  I say, "Screw the spoilers" and play the game myself.

If there is another thing I like about the series, its the music. Akira Yamaoka is a great composer for the games. I even have these songs on my ipod they're so good!

Oh crap, a Silent Hill thread without cooing over 2? This is a fake silent hill thread! A cylon!

Seriously though. I love the first one. Allow me to reply to old posts. Arguably Silent Hill did rip off resident evil, but then when we go the horror game genre has a rich history of "Who ripped off who". In SH case, it was Jacobs Ladder (film) and resident evil.

1 is my favourite, and the one I recomend. Irigins came out on PS2, and is pretty decent.

I fell out with SH though. The reason being it all philosphical. The first one was scary if a little weird. The second one was more confusing then scary.

"She died but is alive, but dead, but alive, and the monster is a big man with a toblerone for a head who represents guilt?" type sillyness.

Are you talking about Pyramid head? Actually he represents James's unfulfilled desire for punishment for the death of his wife.

And partially his unfulfilled sexual desires, giving Pyramid Head's tendency to rape the mannequins. Even though I haven't played 2, I can look things up, lawl.

Wrongo. The 'rape' scene is kind of rubbish because he still has his clothes on. It only happens once and is kind of hard to make out. Plus the 'maniquins' are just legs on a pair of legs.

Even if we take all that into account, it's still not scary. It's rediculous. You can't just throw random crap in, claiming its scary and metophorical, and have people go on your word.

I should point out at this point I believe the matrix is a film about hackers, not dehumanisation of the working class or whatever the hell it is.

Aka. Guilt. Also you've spoilt the story.

I've been wanting to play Silent Hill, problem is, they're all on Playstation consoles, which I don't own.

However, Silent Hill Shattered Memories is on the Wii, and since it is a retelling of Silent Hill 1, I plan on picking it up today.

GUYS, you're posting MASSIVE spoilers, some people here haven't played the games! Could you edit your posts? It's really unfair. :/

Seriously. >_>

Once I get my laptop fixed I'm going to play though Homecoming again. It was actually really, really good.

And Dublinfox, I'm so glad someone finally mentioned the music! The music is wonderful, I have all the OST's. :

EDIT: Argh nevermind, I'll just change the thread title. :D

The mannequins themselves are representations of his sexual desires, as are the nurses, and the mandarins. The Abstract Daddys are formed for Angela, about her past with her father. And being hard to make out is what makes it seem "scarier", if it was straight up Pyramid Head x Mannequin porn, wouldn't be scary, just disgusting.

And I never said Silent Hill was scary. Personally, certain endings have pretty much ruined any chance of any Silent Hill being scary, won't say what type they fall into, but every Silent Hill game has them.

Let's not forget Maria. Her tarty clothing, etc. She was meant to be the "saucy creature" that James always wanted to find in Mary. Silent Hill just forced upon him his deepest desires, and yet, twisted them into something horrible in order to torture him emotionally.

Oh crap, I missed that one Dublinfox! Yeah Homecoming is for the PC too. :D

Catwings, you should really play those games, Origins is a prequel to Silent Hill. :P And Homecoming is just an awesome story about a hot guy. And I thought The Room was okay. Keep in mind it wasn't meant to be a Silent Hill, it was meant to be a game about a town NEAR Silent Hill... But they just stuck the title on because it's initial idea didn't recieve much buzz. But even so, I thought it was a really original idea.

I don't appreciate the Pyramid Head fangirl-ism either, it's gross. He's a creature of power and death, I just think he's awesome because he's BADASS.

Don't think of it as a spoiler.

I honestly really do love every game in the series, except for The Room. It sucked.

Well, technically 4 wasn't suppose to be a Silent Hill game. But Konami added it anyway. You know what sucked? The comic books. There was a 5 issue series called Silent Hill: Dying Inside and its just terrible. It hardly mentioned anything from the games and they rarely showed any monsters.

Yeah, as I just said, they stuck the Silent Hill title on at the last minute when they realised what people actually thought.

I've never read the comic books, I can't find them anywhere. But if they suck then maybe they're not worth reading... but I just want to OWN them! *twitch*

Actually Sabre, the spoilers started with your post. :P

I don't see how, I only gave away stuff that happens in the first level.

If a horror game isnt scary, it's failed completly. The first one has a scare factor, the rest fall flat on their arse. Also you can do deeper meaning, that's fine, but SH2 is nothing but psudo interlectual wanking.

A very minor spoiler for 3, but if you've got this far you already know more, but for me a perfect example of how SH botched horror is a scene in 3 where you are in the freakish other world, and you come across a haunted house ride. You go in and it's pristine. You know you'r in trouble. As you go through it is very scary despite not alot happening, then you reach the final room that is going to make you crap yourself. The scariest thing in this nightmare so far. You open the door, you hands shaking on the controler to reveal ...a flying red light bulb? No joke, the climax of this scene is a lightbulb that chases you around not shuting up.

Unrelated, but cool.

Silent Hill 1 hasn't even struck me as being near scary. I just beat things over the head with a rusty pipe, then move on.

hmm. I can't tell if that's true or you are just one of those horror guys trying to make your balls look big.

What games have you found scary?

Dino Crisis, Aliens vs. Predator as the marine, AvP2, also as the Marine, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (Nemsis himself was really the only scary thing, what with his chasing you through doors), The Thing, things like that.

I'll say why SH isn't scary for me, it's because it is too easy to kill the monsters (which don't look scary in the least) with the pipe. I just bat them out of the air or over the head, and take minor, if any, damage. And I have the hammer now, so I go around 1-2 hitting most things. Things I can't beat down, I use my reserve of handgun ammo to take down. And the "shock" scenes just don't make me jump for some reason.

With the exception of the horrible "The Thing" game, it seems you go for panic horror. I like jump scares myself. Try Alien Resurection on PS1. It's nearly impossable, and horrible dataed, and a bit naff as a result, but back in it's day that was the scariest of the alines games.

Beat it, and it could give you a bit of a fright. The Newborn alien always was a tad creepy.

I'm playing through Shattered Memories right now, and I'm loving it! The nightmare scenes can really get the blood pumping, and a lot of the cell phone messages can be pretty disturbing.

I love the somber atmosphere in the game as well, the music adds a lot of emotion. Though I love run&gun games, I also like to play the games that have a lot of emotion to them.

Than tell us, what in your opinion, is the most horrifying, disturbing most psychotic mind-f***ing game you've ever played or heard of?
