DZComposer
I've had to deal with a couple of people who created sock-puppet accounts lately. I'd just like to take a moment to post a friendly reminder that this is a serious rule violation, and a violation of the TOS agreement that you checked the box for without reading. Guest FoXXX
Being completely honest, I did read the agreement before I registered, too bad I can't remember any of it :P

Not like I'm trying to put you down or anything like that but thats sort irrelevant to the subject, He's means more then one account per person. DZComposer
What about multiple IP's? I use more than one computer you know... Multiple IPs is fine. I don't expect everyone to login to SFO from the same machine every time.I just don't want people to create sockpuppet accounts.

DZComposer
some of the folks simply forgot the passwords to their old account, though. There is the "forgot your password" option on the login screen, and you can also e-mail me and I can give you a new temp password (provided the e-mail is from the address associated with your account, so keep that address current).Too slow, and I don't do anything illegal...maybe, I just use to get IP banned on Quake a lot lolProxy servers aren't necessarily slow. Most large networks run all of their internet traffic through a proxy for security scanning and content filtering, and they still get fast bandwidth. Yes, there will be added latency, but in a LAN setting it is less than 10ms if there isn't deep packet inspection going on.Of course, if you're using a public open proxy, you may have severe performance issues as these things are often overloaded. They also may be running deep packet inspection to harvest data for who knows what purpose. Some could even be honeypots for MPAA/RIAA/ESA/BSA organizations looking for people to sue for downloading pirated stuff. In short, I wouldn't trust a public open proxy to do anything.Of course a private proxy that you control can be an excellent tool to get around annoyances that some organizations put on their networks. I've even heard of people getting free wifi in hotels by tunneling over DNS to a private proxy, though it is worth noting that that is likely a violation of federal law. Ellipzocore
I used to use those public proxies, but I wasn't really satisfied with them, so I quit using them. I couldn't really trust them anyways, so I feel much better now that you mentioned that DZ.
DZComposer
OK, so I busted ANOTHER sockpuppet today. Apparently this message isn't getting out, so tonight I am going to do an IP-Username audit, and any IP addresses that have multiple user-names on them will be temp-banned unless I can sufficiently determine that they are separate people. These accounts will also be named'n'shamed in a sockpuppet announcement thread..Consider this the warning. If you have a sockpuppet, delete the account now. If it gets snared in the audit, you will get temp-banned.I hate to go BOFH like this, but if you guys can't follow the rules, you leave me little choice. DZComposer
Don't worry, I'm not going to blindly fire. It's pretty easy to tell if the accounts are different people.
ThePointingMan
just wandering, is their any common reason as to why people make multiple accounts? I don't quite get why you would do that. :?
Sabre
just wandering, is their any common reason as to why people make multiple accounts? I don't quite get why you would do that. The main reason is sock puppet account.Let's say we are debating. I like strawberry icecream, you like chocolate.Let's say you are 'winning' the debate.I would make a fake account so I could make a point without hypocrasy and give my opinion the appearence of credability and popularity. I could also use to threaten you or otherwise break the rules without risking my main account.eg.you- Chocolate is bestme- Strawberry is bestfake- I agree, Strawberry is best also you deserve to die for liking chocolate.Of course, in practice it gets alot more complex then that. Some people even have entire fake conversations, or in some rare examples, have the fake argue a strawman version of their opponents possition to easily destroy it.eg.me- strawberry is bestfake- chocolate is best and also I'm a racistme- see. chocolate is the flavour for racists.Again, a hugly simplified version. DZComposer
The audit is now in process. I have already polled the database, so even if you delete your sock puppet now, you're busted. I'm seeing some missed spambots and potential sock puppets already. Also, SMF logs the last TWO IPs used, so don't think logging on your puppet at school today saved you. DZComposer
There are 77 user accounts that share an IP with at least one other account. Most of them appear to be spambots, but I still need to check all of them out.... Whee...Lol, you shouldn't have said anything I pulled the data out of the database before making that post, so it's moot.
DZComposer
AUDIT COMPLETE.Good, it looks like the warning was heeded. I found no obvious sockpuppets. I did find a bunch of spambots, and I purged them from the database. There were a couple of users with suspicious circumstances that will have to explain them, but they do not warrant a ban and name'n'shame at this time.I would like to re-iterate that there is zero-tolerance for sockpuppets. From this point forward, all sock puppet accounts will be perma-banned, and the puppetmaster accounts may be temp-banned if the violation is egregious enough.
