Falconman
everyone knows (or should know) the ring around the rosies. But does everyone know what it means???Here let me break it down for those who dont (note:i bearly learned this 2day)"ring around the rosys" is One of the first visible signs of infection were red rings surrounding a rosy bump, all over the victim's body.(The black plague)"Pocket full of posies"A common belief of the time was that the plague was borne on "foul air." The rationale was that people could protect themselves from the bad air by keeping their local air smelling sweet. That, and it also helped them deal with the smell of death..."ashes,ashes"In the terminal phases of the disease, victims would be hemorrhaging internally, sometimes triggering sneezing as it irritated the breathing passages. "Ashes" is a child's approximation of a paroxysm of sneezing. In this weakened state, a victim could, and often did, sneeze their lungs out. Messy..."we all fall down"By now, this one should need little explanation...*all this from http://www.scaryplace.com/ringaround.html*

Sabre
On a related note. Many nursry rymes and fairy tails have been censored over the years. In the originals, people used to die in grusome ways alot. I forget which one it was, but one ended in the witch being fitted with shoes made of hot iron and dancing to death.Pretty much due to this protect the children mentality, as well as disney. When they made the hunch back cartoon, and pocahontis, people were understandably suprised. Hunchback has alot of horrid death, along with lust, religion ect. Pocahontis was originally a kid and a middle aged man.
Dublinthefox
I would say that the Freddy Krueger nursery rhyme I've ever heard, but I don't think it counts. Or does it?

rainfyre66
The stuff that goes over kids heads...when I was a little kid, my grandma used to sing us this one song that me and my siblings loved to sing too, called "Johnny Rebeck", and it was about a Dutchman who ground up people and animals into sausage until he met the same fate in his very own sausage grinding machine. Robert Monroe
A lot of fairy tales and nursery rhymes are like this, but there is always one that freaked me out, even as a kid.Who killed Cock Robin, I think is it. Even as a kid I found it freaking weird that this damn sparrow was SO PROUD to have murdered someone with a damn bow and arrow. And my fairy tale book had a pretty detailed drawing of him LYING ON THE GROUND WITH BLEEDING WITH AN ARROW IN HIS CHEST.
