Shooting Game Perfection

In your opinion what makes the best shooting game?

Is it first person, or 3rd person?

Does it have a story, or just pointless action?

Come up with your own questions, just think about what makes a perfect shooting game, then discuss here.

Or, if there is already a game out that you think defines "Shooting Game" then tell us, and be sure to say why!

My perfect shooting game is Star Wars: Republic Commando.

Republic Commando is about a squad of enhanced clone troopers and their part in the Clone Wars. Each squad member has their own unique ability and personality. The game also features an array of weapons and aliens. You can also control your squad with commands telling them to take cover, heal themselves, slice into computer networks, place demolition charges, breach doors, kill specifically targeted enemies, and much much more.

All this, tied in with the awesome game play, visuals, and voice work cause this game to be labeled as my perfect shooting game.

That game needs a sequal. Stupid cliff hanger ending.

Perfection is a little extreme, but I quite like Halo.

Yeah, Halo's quite good. Nice engine, cool weapons.

And they did plan a sequel to Republic Commando, but it got canceled for unknown reasons.

Many would believe that perfection is opinion based, some hardcore halo fanboys find halo and only halo entertaining. Not to say that it sucks, its actually really good.

To me, perfection is regardless of 1st or third person, to me its about story, because let's face it, the basis of every shooter is to point and shoot someone, right?

Story that is slightly original and with either immersion of the player or good character development. Multiplayer, its about how much fun you can have, and so forth.

Ok let me skip to the chase, to me perfection is Uncharted 2 and MW2. That's my opinion.

MW although has player immersion, was boring in singleplayer, which it makes up for in multiplayer. Uncharted 2 had an original plot, character development, and a good overall engine and game mechanics, multiplayer doesn't deliver in my opinion though.

You bring up some good points. Indeed, perfection is opinion based, but that's the point, I want to know your opinions.

MW2 should definitely be mentioned for its game mechanics. In multiplayer, since its so widely played, you'll often come across hackers, campers, or cheaters in your lobby. This makes the multiplayer annoying at times, but still overall fun.

As for Uncharted 2 its technically an action/adventure game. I agree on the story though, it was very nice. I also think people don't give the multiplayer in that game enough credit. Its got all your regular matches, plus it also ads new things to the table like an objective mode, and a machinima mode.

I hate that argument. It's like when people say "Games are just pressing buttons".

That's true, when most people think of shooters they think of going and blowing everything away for no reason at all.

I hate games like that. There needs to be some kind of backstory.

I disagree. Some games are story driven, but do you need a story to play mario or poker?

That's because the element of the game itself is enough to keep you interested, but shooters to me involve sometimes nothing but shooting.  Cover system may change things up a bit but it's still the same concept.

Well, I think the Mario backstory is understood by now.  :P
