Details of the 3DS Announced

So far, my main concern is that so many of the 3DS titles announced so far are remakes. 3DS will need some good NEW games if it is to be a success.

This, combined with other things the company has done in the past couple of years, is making me wonder if all the money Nintendo got from DS and Wii is going to their heads and making them big-company lazy.

I agree..

No need. Its DS compatible. But yeah it would be bad.

AWESOME!!! I was wondering about that. :)

So far, I can kinda see what angle they're coming from by putting in the remakes. They're breaking in the console by giving us titles we are familiar with, but with a new twist, whether or not we want new games, they know we'll buy those titles. It's their way of introducing the console into the hands of consumers, so they'll be compelled to buy the new games since they already have the console.

There are a ton of games coming out that I want, but the only games I'm buying with the 3DS are Star Fox 64 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D. Once I get more cash to buy them, I'll go for Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil Revelations, and Resident Evil The Mercenaries.

Listening to a podcast and they mentioned a few points I never considered.

1- The price is about the same as a PSPgo! which sells at a loss iirc, dont quote me on that though. Anyway, comprable price for comprable hardware.

2- Ports. We've seen a bunch of PS2 and N64 stuff, but... one guy on the podcast worried that it would become a trud mountain given that the power of the system isnt to far from the wii, and the PSP was a mountain of PS2 ports, that the 3DS will be mostly wii party game ports in 3D. I don't think it will be that bad, but then I thought the wii was going to be amazing.

EDIT: I just learned theres a DSu Shantae game. I don't have a DSi but I can play it on 3DS.

Something just occured to me: if the 3DS has gamecube graphics, and it's 3X smaller, what can they do with something the size of a Wii?!

No, they aren't as good as the Wii. More of as good as Gamecube pushed to the fullest.

Whoops, fixed. I meant to say Gamecube

People who are bad-mouthing the 3DS's performance haven't been paying attention.

Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that exceed the Nintendo Wii, and with 3D shaders they can make games that look close to current generation visuals on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on the lower resolution screens.

Off the record information from developers working on the system have indicated that Nintendo 3DS will pack not one, but two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, along with a 133MHz GPU, 4MBs of dedicated VRAM, 64MBs of RAM, and 1.5GBs of flash storage.

Dual CPUs is nothing to sneeze at, and this GPU is supposedly pretty impressive for it's power consumption. A little more VRAM would be nice, but the only thing I find atrociously low is that 1.5Gigs of flashmem storage. I've seen tiny-assed flash drives with as much capacity as 32Gb.

And the developers aren't complaining either.

I'll trust a developer who has had intimate knowledge of the system over some blogger who is only drawing conclusions from the visuals of ported games.

The launch titles are NOT going to be representative of what this thing can do. That is never the case with a new system launch.

Pfft, on a good day, the Gamecube pushed to it's fullest could match/slightly defeat the Wii in the graphics department, and most certainly trumps it in the non-shovelware department.

Truer words were never said :)

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/21/this-is-whats-powering-the-3ds-graphics/ <- more info on the 3DS's GPU. Looks like it's a little bit more capable than the PSP's. They mention that they have reason to believe the GPU will be clocked to 400MHz, which makes it able to render about the same number of polygons as the PSP. This assumes Nintendo isn't making modifications to the chip, so bear that in mind.

Although this is a concept trailer, I believe that nintendo has the ability to make something like this. I can't wait to see what we can make this thing do with mods.

Note that the video in that link is NOT the 3DS. It's some other system, likely designed specifically for the purpose of demonstrating the GPU.

Awww, I thought the 3DS was really powered by a samurai armor-wearing skeleton.  :(

I'm serious. I'm the kind of person who used to think an avatar was just a big blue alien...

On a related note to the price. After hearing about the game "Game Dev Story" I decided to check the prices of iCrap to see if I could get one. They are stupidly expencive at £250+. As such, £180 for the technically superior 3DS doesn't seems that bad, though this is the Ubisoft DRM falacy of the worst justifying the rest.

I have a question: If the 3DS is compatible with the DS, but doesn't use a styles, then how does it play games like Starfox Command where the controls are based around it? Or does it still have a styles for this reason?  :?

From the Youtube video showing what games would be on it, I will assume that the 3DS is capable to Possibly-better-than-Gamecube graphics  (The new Nintendogs had fur rendering, which is still not seen that often), but a lot of games will still have not all too good of graphics (The racing game, I assume Metal Gear Solid 3 is just because they're actually porting the graphics that were on the PS2).
