I'd have to go with the NES.  I grew up and still follow video game consoles since the 80's and you'd be hard pressed to find anything that matches it's legacy.

Atari 2600 comes a close second.

In no particular order;

NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari VCS 2600/Colecovision/Intellevision, PS1/PS2, GameBoy, and N64.  There are several more that I have failed to list, and that I apologize for.  There is no single greatest console ever made, all of them had their own ups and downs :).  In the end, all are great as they serve one purpose; TO PLAY GAMES!  (Excluding the Virtual Boy, lol)

I would have to say the Nintendo 64, there were just so many memorable and landmark games for that console.

Game Boy advance. I'm biased, cuz that was my first game system (I was sheltered from video games til i was eight.) It still works, even though I've broken two DSes since then. My only beef is all the money I wasted for attachable flashlights when I could have waited til the SP came out (which I also broke )

Gameboy advance? Seriously? I liked Golden Sun and mario advance, but its library was a bit lacking. Too many cheap remakes of other games for non handheld consoles. Like almost every other game was a cheap remake, except a few classics like Advance wars or golden sun or whatever.

I would say SNES, then Wii second. Wii's library isn't the best on earth, but the fact you can buy all those classic games makes up for it too. I never got to play N64 games until recently on virtual console, and also I bought zelda collectors edition quite a few years back. Sony Playstation 1 had a few classics also.

Like I said, I'm biased. I know there are better consoles, but for one I only have a wii which is my second fave, I didn't get an xbox or ps3 because i wouldn't be allowed to play the good games anyway... Besides how can you forget Pokemon Krystal Crystal?  :P BTW DS third, Gamecube fourth, then N64.

2. PS3 FTW!

3. N64, fairly decent. Good games came from it.

A region free PS2, why, it only last gen game system that can play it older titles. Plus if you get a region free one you can play any PS2 or PS1 title.

I want a chipped PS1 so I can play games that never came out over here.

For next gen (or is it considered current gen now?) I'd have to go with the PS3. Good repetoire of games, good exclusives, and it has the hardware to handle the graphics like they ain't nothing (Xbox can struggle with em at times), free online access (Xbox has the subscription), easy to use, customizable interface (<3 my Krystal background on it, with L-A-I-R icons), good memory, built in wireless (Xbox needs an expensive attachment, at least for the original system, which I have), better controller (The Xbox has its joysticks wear out, and they develop some creep in em, which can mess you up, but the PS3 controllers almost all stay.... tight), ability to surf the web.

For all time, the N64 has the most games I enjoy (Starfox 64, Turok, Turok 2, Turok 3, Turok: Rage Wars, DOOM 64, Duke Nukem 64, Goldeneye 007, Body Harvest, Ocarina of Time, Hexen, to name a few).

I prefer the xbox controlers to the PS3 ones. I will admit on a idealist level the PS3 sounds much better. However, the performance thing about PS3 having graphics that slow down the xbox. I've always heard the opposate. The PS3 version of Oblivion, Bayonetta and GTA4 are often (from what I've read) considered inferior.

I have the PS3 version of Resident Evil 5, and Milky has the 360 version. PS3 has mad framerate issues, whereas the 360 only lags in particularly crowded Mercenaries map situations.

Only certain games it works better on Xbox. That's because they were designed on the 360 and that's why they perform a bit better on it. But I have played the 360 version of Bayonetta, and I own the PS3 version, and I prefer the PS3 version. It may take half a second longer to load a level, if that. But if you play a high graphic MP game on 360, it tends to get bad framerate lag, but the PS3 handles em like nothing.

N64, for three reasons:

1. Graphics. It had good enough graphics that you could tell what things were supposed to be, but the minute details were up to your imagination, which made the games more immersive.

2. The controller. It might have been a bit clunky, but it's joystick and button layout was good enough to pilot an Arwing through Venom-2.

3. The variety of games. It was good, with many that are now considered classics or the beginnings of major genres. Personally, I find that N64 games have the best balance of gameplay and graphics/effects. Remember that, back when games were judged on whether they were Fun to play, not on how good the graphics were? (*Takes Julius' cane and bops you with it*)

Second best is the PS2, simply because it has proved so versatile.

I would also have to say the N64 is the best.

It was the most graphically powerful console of it's generation, it introduced the Joystick and rumble feature to home consoles, and it's games were just flat out fun to play.

Super Mario 64 set the standard for 3D games, Ocarina of Time is still considered by many to be the greatest game ever made, Star Fox 64 broke in the rumble feature for controllers, and GoldenEye proved that First Person Shooters could work on a console.

And who can argue with the rumble pak?!
