Mud Slinging Contest?

In a recent thread elsewhere, me and a guy were having an argument over something that is apparently big news in the US of A. A guy won a prize in a halloween costume contest for his KKK outfit. The OP claimed the law should do something, or at least the guy should show respect for the blacks of the past.

A friend told me not to enter the fray as all would end up covered in mud, or poo depending how rude you want to get. I ignored him and dived in armed with logic and utilitarian beliefs. The thread ended with, as my friend predicted, everyone covered in poo. Even the guy in Shawshank Redemption would be smelly.

In an "I told you so" moment, he mentioned how certain topics are impossable to discuss without this happening. All reason, logic, and open minded debate goes out the window and basicly turns into a mud slinging contest. Even if you 'win' you will still be covered.
