Sabre
I was reading about District 9, a film I like, and the director said the aliens were bipedal and humanoid because humans can never sympathis with something truely alien. He mentioned that if they had 4 legs then people would think of them like dogs.I know rubber forehead aliens exsist because they are cheap, but does that mean it's impossable? I have tried to think of a non humaniod alien or robot you feel sorry for, but I cant think of any that have even attempted it. Do you think it's possable? ballisticwaffles
nope. nothing. not a blessed thing. I suppose it exactly as you said. They play to our emotions with two feet.
Milkyway64
It's certainly a lot harder, but it IS possible I think. Sometimes people sympathize with ideas rather than body. Look at disney's The Fox and the Hound. Quadrupedal animals that talked and had rough moments, pulls it off well enough.Dunno how well this would hold up with a serious sci-fi race though. Sabre
They are anthro and are extremely cute though. By anthro I mean human in behavior, beliefs, speach ect.I realised that Mr Gutsy from Fallout might count, but he's more funny then relatable. Milkyway64
I thought you meant physical appearance only. In that case, it's pretty damn hard to relate to something that doesn't think in words. It's like (forgive me, I'm freakin' obsessed with this series) trying to relate to Metroids from the Metroid series. You can possibly FEEL BAD for them (old Yeller anyone?) but you can't really sympathize WITH them.
Vy'drach
Dunno if this counts, but I felt bad for a Fearless in the game Bayonetta.9:10 to 9:20 in this video.

Star Fox Runner
I can see where your coming from with this. If the creature has human characteristics, such as being a biped, you are able to relate more to it. If the creature isn't of a humanoid shape, they are more likely to associate it with an animal. And when some people encounter wild animals, their instinct is usally "KILL IT KILL IT!"By giving it human like features, that animal relation is absent. ThePointingMan
Oh, I had it the wrong way around. I thought it made more sense if you reversed what you are talkin about.

Asper Sarnoff
Don't you feel a little sympathy for the poor little chap to the left?Still though, it's mostly the humanoid elements about him that make people feel for him come to think of it. Fire Yoshi
He mentioned that if they had 4 legs then people would think of them like dogs.Speaking of Aliens and dogs...I just thought of something.Let's say an Alien is watching us from far, far away with some sort of super telescope. The Alien sees many people walking their dogs...but then watches as they pick up after the dog when it leaves droppings on the ground, then putting them in a bag to throw away.Wouldn't the Aliens think the dogs were in control? DZComposer
It's truer than you think. Many humans think lesser of other humans over stupid shit like skin color. If we dehumanize eachother, why would we sympathize with something that clearly ISN'T human?
ballisticwaffles
now that i have thought aboot it, lots of things get our sympathy. Whales, dolphins, insects, dogs, cats, hamsters, dick cheney, they all get our sympathy dont they? none of them resemble humans at all, and yet we still love them and sympothize with them, do we not? I love the hell out of my dog, but I don't think of him as on -my- level. He's not an equal, so you see.

I hold my pets to be my equals (while at the same time calling them my pets)
