Xortberg
I agree with Sabre almost 100% on this. A good example of tradition/conservative christian values being stupid can be found in Corinthians 11 in the bible:"For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man"If we went by tradition and conservative christian values here, we'd be punishing women for having hair, how sick and insane and twisted is that? Tradition is pretty bad in this sense. What Sabre is basically saying is that sexism, racism, and homophobia need to go away, and of course he's right about that, pretty hard to argue with that without sounding like a disgusting idiot. Tradition as in, let's buy a christmas tree or let's decorate easter eggs however, is not a bad thing, so tradition in and of itself isn't bad per se. I believe in freedom of speech, freedom to do whatever you want as long as you're not hurting anyone, and freedom of thought. And overall, I agree with Sabre's main points. How can you not agree that sexism etc is stupid? The thing is, no single person here has backed homophobia or sexism or anything like that. What we were doing was pointing out the good sides of tradition, while admitting that progression has merits too. It's not an 'I'm right, you're wrong' kind of argument. Both sides have positives and negatives.

Tradition is pretty bad in this sense. You know that you're misinterpreting that biblical passage right? Not everything in the bible is meant to be taken completely literally, hence why there are so many individuals who go "wtf" when reading something in the bible without divulging into the context or other circumstances surround it or by comparing the original meaning of the hebrew or greek language around it, etc. The laws in Leviticus, for example, were meant to be for the Israelites before Jesus' time but all those laws concerning Christians today became null and void when Jesus died. ZM Anonymous
I hate tradition. It's dumb, it holds us back, and it falls under the ubrella of 'sacred'. If we all did as our pairents did we would still be in a cave hitting each other with rocks. Progression is key. It leads to cures, comforts and happiness. Tradition, whatever name it goes by, be it conservative, family values, moral gaurdians, is bad. Slavery is traditional, should we go back to that? What about homophobia? Sexism? Racism? These are all as traditional as any tradition you can think off. Not only that, but they were new at one point. So do they not count? As for 'Ancient Wisdom' or 'Alturnitive Medicine', there's a funny thing. As Dara O'Brean put it (paraphrase) "We tested it. The stuff that worked became 'medicine' and the stuff that didn't became 'woo'." This looks like some smug way of acting like you know more than anyone because you're probably in college.
