Sabre
Before this place closes I wondered what your opinion is of the so called Straight Pride Parade. These days most of my friends are gay people or furries. I won't get into the gay/straight issues and inconsistancies reguardless of logic, but rather tackle the thing about gays, furries and related stuff that irritates me and is imo the reason people don't like them much. The flaunting of their fetish/kink/lifestyle/whatever you want to call it.Gay pride made sence back when they were oppressed as it showed that wouldn't go away if the problems were swept under the rug, but now it's not serving a purpose, and is just annoying. Furries are the worst for this because they will do or say some very unplesant things in public and then complain when people don't approve. To say that people don't care what you do in the bedroom but do care that you are forcing it into their faces gets the common defence of "Well every day is a straight pride parade". Robert Monroe
I often joke about throwing one of these with my homo/bisexual friends (often with an overt 1950s flair with the "costume" and smoking classy pipes and whatever), because I agree that while you have the right to your own sexual lifestyle doesn't mean you have to continuously remind us about it. I mean yeah, yeah, it's fun to stereotype furries as whiny, socially worthless insects making the world a worse place for the rest of society, but it also isn't exactly true. Straight people do this as well. Members of many other minorities do the same. The problem doesn't lie with gay people, furries, or any of that sort, but attention whores. "User"
The problem with things like Gay Pride parades is that they stereotype all gay people as one's who flaunt around their sexuality in a very promiscuous way. I know gay people who are actually upset at the entire concept of pride parades because it portrays them in a very dirty way when, in actuality, these same people flaunt their sexuality as much as a straight individual would - that is barely or never. If anything they would much rather have a pride parade devoid of sexual stunts and more of a G rated march with very light, if any, signs of affection between people of the same sex.Case in point, Gay pride parades as they currently are aren't the best way to advance their cause and they alienate gay people in the process. The problem doesn't lie with gay people, furries, or any of that sort, but attention whores. And a much greater % of furries ARE attention whores in a negative fashion compared to other "minorities". Are you very sure that isn't bias talking for you?I see no relation to the addition of a tail to their subjects and incessently talking about things they shouldn't. "User"
Are they, now? Are you very sure that isn't bias talking for you? While I don't have any "hard facts" I've been around the fandom for 6 years now and living in a city with one of the world's highest level's of multiculturalism I can safely say, with all honesty, furries are a MUCH more outspoken group... Milkyway64
Which is dodging around the question. "Are you sure it's not bias speaking for you?" You are, after all, a furry, so naturally you'd see more of what goes on there than you would the gay community. On top of this, you have, at times, expressed shame in them, which may skew your judgement all the more.

Think about it. Ask 20 furries and 20 non-furries (so bias is irrelevant) who are familiar with the fandom if they (furries) are more likely to speak out and be noticed. I will guarantee you that the non-furries (which I am not) will have a more...negative perception of furries as a whole. So is there bias in what I am saying? Yes, of course but that's not to the detriment of the fandom.

If they weren't furries and knew that much about it (I'm not gay, so I don't know a lot about the gay community, including that they apparently have problems with the parade) I'd say they didn't like furries and, of course, would put a negative light on them.My personal experience may mean very little, but a lot of, no, most people I know have no clue what a furry even is, barring the furries themselves. If they were so outspoken, wouldn't they have a bigger reputation with the outside world?
Sabre
I'm with user on this. While there are few hard facts on furries, most of the ones who are 'community active' tend to be pretty bad. I've said many times of my first furmeet which changed me from furry to furry by technicality. Long story short half the 30 strong group vanished to have gay sex (the gay sex part learned after the fact), and even now groups of 2 or 3 disappear mid meet. On a day out gamers are just guys. Furries, even without suit, have to telegraph it at high volume. You could argue that furries atract attention whores and drive away the quieter ones, but this doesn't happen to gamers for example. This means nothing in the grand scheme of things, as straight people disappear at parties, too.Again, it boils down to attention whores, not furries or gays themselves. Pray tell, what kind of furry goes to a con or meet, anyway? What furry actually has a suit? Now of those, which is more interesting to talk about, those people or the kind that doesn't talk about it, mirroring the rift in the gay community as well.
