I bought a new copy of Halo Reach for my friend's birthday on Black Friday. Upon giving it to him, I found out that he had already gotten the game from someone else.  Since I bought the game on black Friday, it was only $30. It also came with a free strategy guide for the game. 

Now here's where my problem lies;

I want to return the game while keeping the strategy guide, since my friend never got the guide and wants it. Can I return the game while keeping the guide since it was free? (I bought this at a Walmart btw.)

You should as long as its within its return timeframe.

if not mail it to me because I've wanted to play Reach for a while

I would say unlikely. However You could trade in/sell reach and get most of that money back, or get a refund and buy the guide seperately.
