As the title says, the PSP2 has been announced at a Sony press conference today in Japan :D.  It looks incredible, and from what I'm hearing about it, the system is almost as capable as a PS3 :D

The working title is the Sony N.G.P (Next Generation Portable)

Here's a good OVERALL look by IGN http://psp.ign.com/articles/114/1146358p1.html

Here's a frontal picture :D

Here's the rear of the unit, with a TOUCHPAD :D

This has just swayed my prospected handheld purchases; it doesn't look like I'll be plunking down for a 3DS anytime soon

It has been said that it will also have similar battery life to the current PSP3000 (3-5 hrs) and it does NOT use UMDs.

It's all digital, which is weird given how the pspgo! flopped. It also has 2 sticks. Unreal engine runs on it too, as will Rage engine most likely.

The bad news comes in the form of games. The only developers talking about upcoming games are talking hand me down ports, which was the same problem the PSP had.

It's all digital

I don't believe anyone actually talked about what format the games/media would be on, but there is no UMD drive.

And I'd agree, original games, along with ports, are needed to propel a system forward.  Let's hope that this one will succeed :D

Its not all digital, it'll be using flash cards or something like that.

Isn't that what the PSPgo! uses to store the games you download?

No, not at all. These flash cards are probably more comparable to the DS cartridges.

"Of course, it plays games, too, which will be offered on new flash memory-based cards (so long UMD!)."

EDIT: Just saw part of the press conference; the games will be on some type of SD-Card like format :D

Basically I see this as Sony's play against the 3DS, we'll see how this one goes over time. Looks like the handheld market still has some fire left in it after all.

Power comparable to the PS3 huh? Well, the 3DS has some pretty good horse power behind it, so I'd love to see a comparison of the two.

Given that PSP1 was comprable to a PS2, the games appeared to look like PS2 games on the small screen, but blown up to TV sized revealed they were pretty bad. (see Ratchet Size Matters) However, that being said you don't buy PSP games to play on a big screen. It's a handheld.

What I'm saying is it will likely not have the power anywhere close to a PS3, but rather will be powerful enough to make similar games to those on PS3.

I'm just not feeling the PSP2. I still have an original PSP, and that's my only real handheld until the 3DS comes out. I do have a GameBoy Color, but I don't use that much.

I watched the video and the only REAL thing that interested me was the touch pad on the back.  Seems weird to have it THERE, but it still looked pretty cool.  Not going to buy it since I'm not a handheld gaming person ;)

I understand what you mean there, because it's the same with the 3DS. I saw some preview videos for Resident Evil: Revelations, and with all the pictures being blown up on a big screen, the textures looked pretty blurry.

But on a small screen, it won't look bad.

I'm curious about the price, it obviously has to be over 350-400 dollars.

I think I remember reading something about it being around $299

With all the stuff it has, it's reeeeeally hard to believe.

You could say the same about the 3ds and its $250.

At the moment, I know there are going to be separate SKUs; one with 3G capability and one with regular Wi-Fi.  That could potentially drop price :D

To stay competitive with Nintendo, they'd have to keep it at around the $300 mark.

I don't think it's Nintendo Sony is trying to compete with this time. I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing prices closer to those iProducts.

Sony would still have to compete with Nintendo :P, and in the handheld core gaming consoles, Nintendo is dealing with Sony (Although they have expressed in the past that Sony isn't much of a threat; it's more Apple that they are wary of)
