So, with Valentines Day coming up and people preemptivly getting all mushy and irritating, I thought a pre-emptive thread about SAD was worth doing.

If you never heard of it. SAD is a holiday that occures either the day before or after (personally I think after) VDay to celebrate that just because your single doesn't mean you are a worthless bag of crap doomed to failure in all things. For most this involves treating yourself to nice things. Some throw parties with the intent of finding a date, but that kind of defeats the purpose of SAD imo.

While I don't have plans pre say, I'm thinking of treating myself to a nice take away and seeing the new Jason Stathem film. I'll be on my own too since all my RL friends are couples now.

Furthermore, maybe people who are single and don't want to be should actually, you know...make a legit effort to find someone and not band together, act emo, and start bitching up a storm. I've been single for a good number of years before I started actually putting an effort into getting GF's and I've always found SAD to be just a needless detrimental attention grabber.

Eh, Valentine's Day isn't all that special, in my opinion. Sure, if you do something sweet for someone you like/love and it makes them feel good, that's great! But with how much people go through sometimes, especially with the opposite end of the spectrum of it [That's right, you mellow depressed people you] go and get their panties in a bunch because people won't like them. If you are gonna get that upset, you better have a mental disorder, or at least attempt at being sweet, then get shut down to be sad. Lol

I don't get where you are coming from? First, what makes a 'real' holiday? Does talk like a pirate day, or rememberence day count as 'real' holidays because they are not religious?

Second, you seem to have missed the point of SAD completely. The point is counter the emo bitching singles do on VDay, and, ironiclly enough, to flick a huge V sign at people such as you who look down on singles as lazy, or losers, or worthless simply because they are single. You have, in one post claiming the SAD is BS, showed what attitude SAD is intented to counter.

Silly little things like this don't really appeal to me, but if some people really like it, heck, I don't mind doing something to help them smile. =] Unless I hate them. Then I don't do anything and Cast all my level nine sorcerer spells! and just avoid trolling them.

So with that logic, I guess Christmas isn't a real holiday either. Seeing as how Jesus NOR Santa Clause exist it is merely a "Made Up" holiday for people to show that they love each other and give gifts. The stores capitalize on Toy/Gift sales and people without family's become depressed because they have no one.

Looks like someone is just jealous because their alone and somehow that is reasonable ground to trash a holiday for EVERYONE else.

I think what Milky was trying to get at is that it's just silly for a group of people to pick a day and call it a holiday (especially in this case if it's a 'counter' to another widely known holiday) without it having some real recognition at a religious, national, or cultural level. I mean, if what you are saying is correct (and technically it might very well be) I can make any day a holiday for any reason I choose fit. I'd like to think that a day cannot be considered a holiday unless it has a majority of people in a given area who at LEAST are at the level where they recognize it as "valid", even if they don't celebrate it. Considerable media attention helps significantly with this.

So, having a "SAD" day is kinda like gathering your single friends to celebrate something you could have celebrated on the 14th, but excluding people with partners already.

Maybe it's because here in Mexico we celebrate "friendship" over "love" on the 14th, so it's probably different everywhere else xD.

Tbh, the wiki page for SAD is crap. The anti-valentines page is better, but that is more of what you decribed. Emos and Anti Consumerists.

The general feel of the holiday is meant to be good times. As I see it, VDay is exclusionary. As show, the general attitude to single from couples is one of negativity. The main forms of celebration are things like, parties, treating yourself, doing fun stuff basicly. It's like what VDay is for couples.

As I said previously, some people like to do charity work or hold a singles party where a bunch of singles try to get dates, but imo those go against the laid back anti-depressive idea of the holiday.

As for the choice of day, I dunno. If the SAD is meant to be anti-depressive, then holding the day after makes sence. After being mocked and picked on for being single for a whole day it kind of makes sence you do with a boost. That's just my opinion though. Maybe it's like talk like a pirate day that it started off as a joke then became real?

As for media attention, I can't say. Agian, talk like a pirate day has been around a while but I never recal seeing it on the news. I guess it would be like quake con. Started as a couple of guys wanting to play Quake with id and snowballed into the biggest fan run LAN party.

I don't think I said anything to that effect at all. What I said is SAD is spitebait for singles who are well, single. As Sabre himself said, it lets those less fortunate in the courting process to feel good about themselves and flip the bird at everyone else. That's not a holiday, it's nerd retaliation.

I don't like it as well personally, it should only be used as a last resort and then only on a temporary measure. If people can't handle others opinions regardless if they are right or not then it just proves that they can't effectively debate.

Where I live it's definatly love. There is a Simpsons episode (and other american shows) where kids give stuff to each other. Kind of weird. I don't recal doing valentines day stuff at school. However, I have heard of kids doing valentines stuff for older people. eg. making valentines cards in art class and giving them to pairents or teacher.

On a related note, the term 'mate' here means good friend, elsewhere it means gf/bf. It was confusing at first when I posted in my native slang and people thought I was gay, or my posts didn't make much sence.
