Can I just say that I really love the censoring system on this board? I'd much rather see something creatively done with objectionable words, as opposed to outright censorship (asterisks), inability to make posts with said words, or banning of offenders, all of which I've seen implemented in other online arenas. Bravi, bravo!

Its a stupid system that should be taken down espescially cause c-r-a-p is censored which is just plain gay. I think its dumb and even at AL you can curse in the ward so why not here.

I like it, but Shawn's right in a sense. Since there's different levels of objectivity (remember, "pants" used to be considered a dirty word), I think some of the more mild words should be allowed (I'm mainly talking about c-r-a-p here, and maybe h-e-double hockey sticks). It's a really creative idea, though, with just that one annoyance.

The censor system is a reloc from SFO.com. I haven't touched it, though I have myself considered taking c-r-a-p and h-e-l-l out it.

So, give me your thoughts on what words need to be removed or added to the censoring filter (personally, I want to remove it entirely because I abhor censorship of any kind, but I'll leave that as a community decision).

I'm perfectly fine with the idea, since it's a lot more creative and less dictorial than other censor methods. It beats, say, preventing the post because of naughty language.

I'd say that the only two words removed are the two we've both mentioned.

I say we should only keep the major ones in. I don't know the whole list but keep the F,A,B words I think. We all are mature enough to handle d-a-m-n, h-e-l-l, and s-h-i-t and c-r-a-p. They're not really that bad

and If someone <b>REALLY></b>whants toothey have very little trouble.

Demonstration: (I'll delete this if you whant, Admins)

crap:normal text

crap: "alterd" string.

(I do sencerly apologize, but I felt I needed to make a point. It is a WELL known glitch for phpbb.....if you do figure out how i did this, don't do it, folks...)

Just because you can do that dosn't mean that you should ([serious face]such an act would normally be an instant, permanant ban, if I where the admin, TRUST ME! [/serious face]), most admins do this to try to keep the flaming, mindless raves, and ill member expiriances (sp...) down, and they have that right, now as for the content of said no-no list, that would depend on the maturity level of the members, the target audiance, and of course, the tastses of the admin.

I have to admit, that one is pretty retarted.

(And yes, I have cussed a guy out once, if you where wondering, ended up feeling like an idiot...)

That all having been said, I'm also entirely against censorship. But I've reached the point where I figure, if a board is taking the trouble to censor words, there's no point in fighting it, and I'd much rather see it done creatively, as I said.

DZ, if you want to get rid of it, by all means do so.

I'm against censorship as well. If you feel like taking it down, you won't have any complaints from me.

I do think that people should be responsible about what they say, though. Maybe some censorship might be needed just for the sake of the community. Just the worst of the worst, i.e. the dreaded F-Bomb, some of the more offensive 4-letter sexual terms, offensive racial slurs, etc. Entirely your decision, though.

I'm not AGAINST censorship. I just don't think it's entirely necessary sometimes.

Like here. Most of the people we get here're mature enough to handle most of the words I can imagine, so there's no true need to be kid-friendly (or, more accurately, parent-of-small-kid-friendly).

Perhaps we could introduce censorship of some of the more offensive words if they become used too often, but I don't think we'll ever have too much of a problem with that here....

I'm against most censorship, but this is fine IMO although I do think that C-R-A-P should be allowed

I want the censor taken down entirely as all it does is piss me off and basically caters to those noobs who cant handle a little real mans talk. Also crap being censored is just plain gay and I found a way around it by using a method im keeping secret.

This is the second largest Starfox forum that I know of. There are more than a few people here who are quite influential over the SF fanbase. There may be a slight inclination for people to come here.

This site also has a friendly atmoshpere, cussing constantly may drive newcomers (I love that word now) from joining this site. I'll be honest I do cuss pretty much every day, but I see it could be abused. The best solution for this in my opinion is to designate a particular language for that language.

We can all live with the filter though, right?

There are censors? cool! I don't mind people swearing but it makes the site look nicer if people don't I actually usually just type stars if I want to write a curse word because I prefer not to swear if its not necessary.

DZ Says: DO NOT post board exploits, no matter how insignificant they are. I will have a decision soon on the censor thing.

I am coming close to a decision. I do know there will at least be a significant reduction in the censor script's usage.

We have a pretty good sized moderator/admin team for the size of our active community (most boards I've seen of our size have maybe 1 admin and 2 or 3 mods), so large-scale software post control is not necesary.

However, I am still debating total removal of the censor from use.

i don't think tottal removal is nessarily good, it is there to chatch those occaisaional slip-ups.

:P ...and I soppose I had it comin....

Edit: I'll leave it alone as a head-on-a-pike sort of exaple....to myself
