Nova
So today "the Pirate bay" has been closed by the FBI. This is bad. Bad Bad Bad. THIS IS WAAAARRR!!!!!! Staff Comment: Since the site is going up and down randomly, it's still somewhat functional so we can't allow direct linking to a warez site, I'm sorry Edited February 18, 2011 by Steve Staff edit

Sabre
Of course it won't. This is stupid macho show of force crap. By making a huge public display of it, they are basicly showing that they will get you eventually. That's crap of course.
Nova
The FBI are technically allowed to do anything... Because their the top authority... (Besides the Secret Service, But they don't do anything but protect people.) TPB has fallen but there is like a million other Torrent sites and new ones popping up every day. Personally I use a torrent site called "Demonoid" where it is a very exclusive Invite-Only community where you can get banned for the minorest of things. Although this is a step towards fighting piracy, Any times where it has been brought to supreme court it has been ruled un-lawful. If they were to make piracy blatantley illegal and not the "Shady law" it is today, It would open everyone up to net neutrality allowing your ISP to limit bandwith to websites that dont give a kick-back to the ISP. So say Youtube declines to pay Bell's fee. Then Bell will limit the download speed you have to the website youtube making the video streaming slow and useless. The war will never end but its a shame that TPB had to fall.
Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted February 18, 2011 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted February 18, 2011 I thought TPB was based overseas..
Sabre
I thought TPB was based overseas.. It's in Sweden, and I don't think the FBI is allowed to trample all over there how it likes the way they do in the US. TPB has 'fallen' before, it always came back. Even if it doesn't, as you said, others will arrive. An invite only pirate group? I know hackers had there own invite only forums and sites, but those tend to be for hackers only, as well as any family or close friends. What would be on an invite only pirate site anyway? DZComposer
TPB is still up. I see nothing in the tech press about it being closed-down. I do know that ICE and the DHS have been seizing domains in the name of stopping kiddie porn, but all they have to do if thepiratebay.org gets seized is buy a non-US TLD domain. Sabre
It was down for me when he first posted this. Likely a coincidence however.
Steve
They just need to change servers, and keep doing what they do,they also probably have backups, so it's a matter of time before everything is up again. I've seen several warez places doing the same thing. The only way to kill piracy is to change the whole industry and people themselves.
Scott7
This ^ Frankly, I don't pirate anything. The only time i've ever iiliegally downloaded something was so i could extract a few of the original meshes and animations from the game ISO file. And even then i had already bought the game for the psp. Piracy, I couldn't give to much of a crap about. It's really only when an organization try's to take over a popular community made site (or the internet in general) do i actually become concerned. Internet is really the only place without a strict set of rules that can be properly enforced, I'd probably flip my lid if the whole thing was taken by the U.S... "User"
Like Nova said, Demonoid is top of the line....IF you have access to it that is, since it's invite only.
Asper Sarnoff
How the heck would the FBI be capable of shutting down TPB? They are Swedish, with servers scattered in several other countries. The FBI doesn't have the jurisdiction to put it down.

By making a huge public display of it, they are basicly showing that they will get you eventually. That's crap of course. This is true. This is what the US government does. Shock and awe, but that only works on the rednecks who know nothing.

"User"
Man, this is bad! Even if The Pirate Bay were to go down permanently something will pop up and take it's place - happens all the time. :)
ThePointingMan
Isn't this kinda good... I mean if there's less pirating going on people can make more money off their stuff and then in the end, they make better stuff because they can afford to buy better things/hire more staff/care more.
