Rik McCloud
Bit of an unusual one but from a quick glance, I do not believe it has been done on this forum yet. Pretty simple question. My personal choice would be his Adventures look as it was the first game I played thoroughly in the series and I spent a lot of time admiring the effort Rare put into modelling him. First off, I was just getting used to the visuals that the new, higher powered consoles were offering. I was very familiar with the Metal Gear Solid head nodding when characters talked in cutscenes or painted on mouths moving on the faces of characters in the Tomb Raider games. So to see a well rendered mouth moving around as realistically as a mouth on an anthropomorphic fox can do, saying words that looked like they were actually coming from the character was a welcome advancement. The way his eyes reflected things in the surroundings, changing colour when inhabited by a Krazoa Spirit, scanning around the environment and blinking added to the experience. Not to mention his expressions were sometimes priceless! The outfit had great attention to detail lavished on it. The stitching and the creases actually helped make me believe that he was wearing his uniform rather than it looking like it was painted onto his body. The little design touches such as the badge on his jacket, the detailing on his backpack, the darker coloured patches breaking up the lighter green on his vest and pants and the red neckerchief made it a cool looking uniform. I'd love to make an accurate reproduction of it someday. Also, I don't think anyone else has spotted this but aren't those yellow stripes down the side of his pants a reference to Han Solo? His pants were blue with red stripes and Fox's were green with yellow. Coincidence? It was nice to see that Fox was made to look like he had some actual muscle mass. He actually looked real. OK, his head was larger than a normal persons' but it just seems to add something that makes him more likeable. The fur effect still stands as one of the best looking I've seen in a video game. Coupled with the vapour that appears when he breathes out in cold areas, his ear twitches and subtle tail flicks and wags and I think it's easy to see why I still enjoy this game. It's just fun to look at and admire, especially through component cables on an HD TV when playing it on the Wii. Anyway, those are my thoughts. Hope you found them interesting and would be fascinated to hear yours :)
CrypticQuery
(Nice topic idea; I don't believe it's been done as long as I've been here ) I'm actually going out on a limb here and saying that I honestly don't like any of Fox's official appearances; none of them seem to capture EVERYTHING that Fox is. But then again...that could just be due to the horrid characterization that the series has suffered . I've always enjoyed certain artist conceptions, but if I had to pick an official one I'd probably go with either Super Smash Bros Melee's or StarFox 64's :P
DoctorAllosaurus
I dig his SNES look, the Melee one wasn't too shabby either.
Fang O'Donnell
My absolute favorite was starfox2 but they didn't release it so I'm gonna say Starfox 64 because when I used to play that game I wouldn't be able to look away from the T,V, for anything
sjrathbun812
I like every single version of him but I think my favorite one is either 64 or melee. But melee pretty much IS 64, except the model is done better.
Vulvokunvrii
I kind of liked his SF adventures version-it brought more of his "cocky" side into the light, instead of him being a near mindless guy going this way and that ("Yes Genreal this", and "Yes Genral that"). His SSBB version isnt too bad either...i even heard some peole didnt like his "look" in said game...i wonder why... it looks fine to me...
El Zorro de la Estrella
Gotta go with Adventures on this one. Like the OP said, he looked AMAZING in that game. He looked nearly real. Awesome fur effects too! Just my opinions, tho! :fox:
Fire Yoshi
Assault, because he cried (almost, from what it seemed). I'd have to go with 64, since that was his first debut in MY head. =) Your first game...it always has your heart. *sniff*

Fluxy
Okay, so the image of Fox "James" McCloud the best, is in Adventures, when Star Fox Rock is playing, and they call at Fox, and he just spins around in his chair and has that smile, Gawd, so awesome. I've always enjoyed certain artist conceptions, but if I had to pick an official one I'd probably go with either Super Smash Bros Melee's or StarFox 64's My opinion is basically what Crazyfooinc said beforehand. Especially in regards to artists' depictions of our resident Fox. Sure, the games give us a base to begin with, but what you can draw and show with your own hands is so much more unlimited and there are endless possibilities. But if I were to choose, I'd have to say Melee!Fox. I would of said Adventures!Fox if I didn't think to hard, but while Fox does look awesome in Adventures, he is so far out of his element that I find his look 'out of character' for Fox. In Melee, Fox is decked out and ready to go to war with the rest of Nintendo's mascots.

SlyJedi
For me, Fox McCloud's best appearance is his Assault one. His outfit and overall design in that one rocked. It looked like the designers combined aspects from his 64 design with his Adventures design (both of which I really love too) and it just worked. Well, that is my take... Ghieri
Definitely Adventures, the animations, the fur effects, he just looks really cool, and his outfit seems like a modern version of his original outfit in SF64. I also like the futuristic outfit he has in SFAssault, but I didn't like the fact that he doesn't have his red "scarf" or neckerchief, which is part of his original concept. The only games where I didn't like his face design too much are Smash Bros. Melee and SBBrawl, in Melee he looks more like a dog than a fox to me, and in Brawl his nose/snout is too pointed, which makes him look weird and not as cool IMO... his outfit is really awesome in Brawl, though (except for his boots, which look a little bit like clown shoes ). Starwing_93
I find his Brawl design just... weird... That head... @.@ I actually don't mind any of his head designs bar the creepy one from the SNES box along with his baggy suit and skinny ankles I'd say overall despite not being my favourite game, the Adventures look is probably my favourite as both his head and costume seem to capture his character well and suit the feel of the game. I'd say a combo of Brawl and Melee come second, as its an update of the 64 costume, but I prefer his face in Brawl to Melee as his eyes and mouth in Melee just don't sit right with me, he looks a bit pissed off a lot of the time IMO. As for the others - SF64 is too blocky but i guess its Ok for the technology at the time, Assault is too far removed from his classic design (no scarf ), and his head on Command just looks plasticky. I don't mind the costume on Command though, I guess it's faithful to the 64 design :D

As I stated earlier in the topic. While Fox does look nice, I feel Fox is too far out of his element and out of character for me to file said appearance as "Best," but that's just my thought. ...he looks a bit pissed off a lot of the time IMO... Well he is a merc, fighting a bunch of other Nintendo mascots, it's just his gameface. As for the rest... Well I'll just admit I'm too oldschool to even regard anything beyond Fox's N64 incarnation. So shoot me.
