Rik McCloud
I was talking to a friend last night who has been a fan of Star Fox for about as long as I have. We both became fans when Star Fox Adventures was released but recently, we feel more than ever that Nintendo has really left this game's fans out in the cold. This may seem like crazy talk especially when StarFox 64 is getting re-re-released (as SF64 was effectively an updated version of the original StarFox) but when you think about it, it's not like as if it is being re-tooled massively. That's fine, you might say. SF64 was the best in the series and doesn't need anything but graphical enhancements to bring it up to date. But at the same time, it's not like as if they are trying to do anything to really advance the series. I know looking back that StarFox has effectively been used as a test bed for new technologies. StarFox showed off what the SuperFX chip could do. StarFox 64 gave us the Rumble Pak for the N64 as well as clear dialogue recordings on a cartridge (a lot of it I can no longer stand to hear due to the amount of internet jokes). Adventures was brought to the Cube to showcase what the console could really do and Command beautifully demonstrated great use of the DS stylus and touch screen. It seemed like a no brainer to think there would be a new, original game for the Wii in the works fairly quickly after the console's release. That was five, very long years ago. So I imagine you can understand my disappointment when I see Nintendo decides to dust off an old N64 cartridge, buff it up and use it to help sell another new console. Don't get me wrong, I respect StarFox 64 as it is a good game. It's just I never really grew up with it like some of you guys did. I was part of the other club who owned a PlayStation because being 9 years old, a massive fan of cars and having the chance to drive a lot of real life models in games like Gran Turismo and a ton of other racing games appealed more. I played SF64 a bit when I went to friends houses and enjoyed it but it never made me want the game. I already liked Fox as a character so when I first saw Adventures, it actually excited me. It looked like I would learn a bit more about him and in ways, we did. He had more emotion and character than the N64's sound bites. During Adventures, Assault and Command, we were treated to a bit more plot development. We learnt a bit more about the Lylat System through Krystal and her woefully overlooked back story but it helped make the place feel a bit more alive. Assault had the will they/won't they hints between Fox and Krystal and the relationships between most of the characters felt more realistic (if poorly voiced at times but the intention was there). I also liked Adventures because it went against the grain of what went before. Considering what Rare had to do with what they had, I think they did a pretty good job and I enjoyed playing the final product a lot. My point is this. Doesn't it seem a little strange to you guys that Nintendo, who a few years ago were looking into the future of gaming by appealing to a mass audience through innovative controls and simple games are now looking back through their archives to find games to help sell a new system? "But they have a new Kid Icarus!", I hear you cry. OK then. If they could reboot a franchise that the majority of Nintendo's new demographic don't even remember, why couldn't they do the same with a game that hasn't seen a release for a quarter of that time? Sure, people keep hanging on for the hope of Star Fox Wii but I can't be bothered with the hearsay any more. It's all very well when big wigs in the company say they are working on something but after so long, it had better be something special and I am past the point of getting excited over small dribbles of information from Nintendo's fairly water tight information booth. Give me some meat to chew on, so to speak. On a final note, all of this waiting and disappointment has led my friend to say that if nothing comes up this year about a potential new Star Fox game, he is giving up on the series. I'm still hanging on by my fingertips but year after year, I become more frustrated and disappointed. I will not be in the line to buy a 3DS. Not for SF643D at least. Nope.
First of all, English is not my first language. Second, I respect your opinion. SF64 is a REMAKE of the original StarFox, not an "updated version". By the way, Star Fox Adventures, Assault and Command weren't really acclaimed by fans in a good way ( In my opinion, Adventures is not that bad ), and most of them ( and me ) hated the way, in Command, you have to use your arwing. Really. Annoying. I don't like the way they putted Krystal in those games. I mean, she has an average-to-good backstory, but then they said "Hey, screw you! She has boobs and fans, that means she doesn't need any backstory! BLAAARGH hurr durr derp derp!". Dinosaur Planet was going to be way better than Star Fox Adventures, believe me. What I'm trying to say is... I will not be surprised if they'll make a reboot of the storyline from this remake. By creating SF643D, the guys from Nintendo are actually doing the better thing they could do for Star Fox. Hell, maybe in the future we'll get a BETTER Krystal! ( Yes you furries, a BETTER KRYSTAL!! ...If they don't kick her out from the possible reboot ) God, even Ocarina of Time is getting a 3DS remake! So, my final answer is: - No, Star Fox is not dead. The only way to kill Star Fox is to kill the fans ( in both literal and metaphorical meanings ).
sjrathbun812
To tell you the truth, I wasn't very happy when I found out that Nintendo is making a SF64 remake. Sure, it will have better graphics, and a couple other things. But deep down, it's just the same game with a little touches up. It's like Nintendo is saying, "Hey, remember that great game we made in the 90's? What if we made a remake of it? Then we'd stop all those fans from squawking and give them the exact same game only it's new." All the fans go: "Weeeee". What Nintendo needs to do is get retro studios and have them make a starfox game for the Wii. I sure there would be a lot more people buying that then starfox 64 3D. I mean it's what the fans have wanted for like 5 years. But it feels Nintendo is just going to cheep out on everything. Sure, there have been a couple new games, but half of these a remakes, and Nintendo isn't going to get anywhere by just giving us the same meat they gave us years ago with a little more seasoning. We want fresh kill. And Nintendo gives us this saying it is....Riiight.

Also Nintendo knows their "hardcore" fanbase too well, nostalgia = $$$.
Rik McCloud
First off, it definitely doesn't seem that StarFox is dead because of the fans. There have been some good points made and I have to admit, I am siding with Wolf Fang on this but Sergiroth and DoctorAllosaurus have made valid points. Nostalgia definitely does sell. Look at how many times Nintendo have re-released the original Super Mario Bros. The ones I am familiar with are on the SNES, GBC, GBA, WiiWare and it was even on a 25th anniversary disc for the Wii! Twice on one console! As for Sergiroth's points, my wording about what SF64 was could have been better. I did mean it was a remake. I also respect your opinion too as you can actually back up your reasons which, as a general theme throughout these boards seems to be alive and thriving which is good. There is a split in opinion between fans of Adventures, Assault and Command. I guess this could be another factor as to why Nintendo has gone back to where a seeming majority of fans think the series is best. Just feels like a kick in the teeth to the rest of us. As for the ever controversial issue of Krystal, if Nintendo actually turned her into a Samus instead of a Princess Peach, I think she would be respected more. Also, I am all for more female heroines in gaming. It is a sad inevitability that they will be looked at as objects but if you give the character some meaning, it doesn't seem as bad. Sure, her back story did seem rushed and as you said, Dinosaur Planet could have shaped up to be a great game and it might have made her more of a better character but at the same time at least there is something there. It's not like the way Katt feels like she is in SF64 to make up the numbers.
Milkyway64
StarFox isn't really -dead- but it's certainly getting there. A lot of points in this topic are true, but do remember that StarFox is a videogame series that belongs to Nintendo, and on top of all that it's in their first-party line up. Nintendo also happens to be rich and shamelessly exploits it's popular series for moar money. Star Fox will only die whenever people stop buying it, and even though people gripe about the last 3 entries, I still think they sold well. (confirm, someone?) Star Fox 64 is hailed as one of the greatest rail shooters of all time and so they're rereleasing it on DS because people would buy it. Depending on how THAT does, another game or three is inevitable.
DoctorAllosaurus
Assault sold well enough to be a "player's choice" title, so there's that.

Fluxy
Well, in my opinion, it isn't dead. And if you talk to people who played Assault, they might say it is a bad game, but in all retrospect, they more than likely at least played it ten times. It had playability, as well as Adventures, as well as the other games in the franchise as well. I don't think Star Fox is dead at all. Nintendo just needs to show it a little more love. <

My idea is that Nintendo is going to treat SF like it's B!TCH and we have no chance of getting an acclaimed sequel,if they don't do anything soon, they might as well get rid of the property,I just want to cut the BS here. I loved SF:As and SF:Ad and I've never played any other game in the series. I'm a fan. So Starfox has a good chance of "dying",unless Nintendo cuts the crappy games. COME AND GET ME TROLLZ! Shinigami
Nope. definitely not dead; on a hiatus for the moment? yeah--but not dead. As mentioned before there's too many fans of the franchise to simply just give it the axe without an outcry of rage. XD

Matrilwood
Sometimes game serials just then another game just pops up out of no-where quite a large number of years later. Diablo3 for example. Unfortunately it usually involves a reset. So you might get something along the lines of Fox meeting Krystal before either of them join the Cornarian Military, something crazy/stupid like that. On the plus side Andross would be back... Or wouldn't have died in the first place because it's in the past... Well... Died because he was kind of dead at the beginning anyway... So he'd be dead but... Not dead dead...
CrypticQuery
IMO Star Fox is long from dead, but Nintendo has some serious work to do if they want to "fix" the series; include better characterization and dialogue, make the games believable and have people attached to the characters more, include refined gameplay, etc. The series is incredible, but it needs some SERIOUS improvement in certain areas if it's going be accepted as another great game. True, releasing SF64 is somewhat of a cop-out, but maybe they're just testing the market to see if Star Fox will still sell.
ARWINGCOMMANDER 3987
No, but it definitely needs more attention. And by attention I mean GOOD attention. Unless they make more games after Star Fox 64 3DS the fanbase will continue to be unbearably cynical and dysfunctional. As much as I like her, they either need to write Krystal out of the story, or put her on Star Wolf, because it looks like she's not going to get anywhere with Fox at this point, and it'll make people stop blaming her for ruining the series. Fureox
or put her on Star Wolf I've always like Star Wolf the way it is, I'd rather not see Krystal in there. Either write her out or find another use for her.

ARWINGCOMMANDER 3987
Or better yet, an item that you collect in the battle field that, when used, sends one of your wingmates out in front of you to attack a few of the enemies coming your way. This is the case for all of them, doesn't matter.
