Sabre
Listening to a podcast they were talking about the 3DS, apparently it can't run Unreal Engine, but smart phones can. Naturally people assumed this was a cop-out like with the wii version of street fighter 4. However, they did some research and came to an interesting conclusion. 1- The 3DS is very similar to the wii to the point where it can play wii games with the minimum of change. Evidence- Lego Star Wars is the wii version with some menu and control changes. 2- The 3DS is as expencive (in the US) and more expencive (in the UK) then an equiverent power smart phone with more features. Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted March 10, 2011 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted March 10, 2011 The 3DS will be my first (real) foray into the current handheld market. I have quite a bit of catching up to do with previous DS titles that I'd like to play. I'm looking forward to the (rumored) Virtual Console aspect of the system. It will be nice to play LADX, Seasons and Ages (If they get released), as well as the original Red and Blue. I'll have to get Heartgold and Soulsilver. None of the launch 3DS titles look interesting to me. My other handheld is a 1000 series PSP that has custom firmware installed. It's a nice system but it doesn't have a real big library of games. Star Fox Runner
Well, it's not surprising really, you can only cram so much power into a handheld device. But the fact that they could cram the power of a Wii into a handheld device is still amazing. But this raises a question for me personally. Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS looks awesome, and it's running on the same engine as Resident Evil 5, which is MT Framework. Though it isn't as visually impressive as RE5, (and they did manage to get the RE5 Demo to run on 3DS during testing mind you). Why is it that they haven't ported RE5 to Wii yet? Sure it would be cut down, but it's still possible. And I know that it would sell well, look how Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition did.
DZComposer
I am not aware of any currently available phones with parallax barrier screens and the requisite dual-GPU to drive them. Also, you fail to account for the fact that most smartphones are subsidized by the carriers. While a smartphone may cost $250 with a 2-yr contract, that same phone costs in excess of $400 without one. The 3DS is not being carrier-subsidized. Besides, comparing the 3DS to a mobile phone is apples-to-oranges. Yes phones can play games, but anything other than something like Angry Birds is not that great of an experience due to lack of buttons and such. Yes, there was a rash of touchscreen-only games when the DS launched, but most games now do not use the touchscreen as the primary input. Also, why should anyone give a shit if the thing can run the unreal engine? That doesn't mean anything. That engine wasn't written for handhelds, so even if it could run, you get better performance out of an engine written for the platform anyway. Plus the reason could be a technical hardware reason rather than a hardware performance reason. The only thing in the 3DS I feel could use a boost is the amount of memory. Besides, power doesn't mean shit. So what if a device can render a photo realistic world in real-time. It's the games that count, and, while the launch list could be stronger, it is way too early to make a call on that. I'd rather play an ancient-looking great game than a photo-realistic piece of shovelware.
ThePointingMan
Not to mention the unreal engine has some REALLY annoying things in it. I'm excited for the 3ds anyways, I like 3d, and at least a few of the games are making me happy to look forward to, (StarFox and Paper Mario especially)

While Lego Star Wars isnt the most demanding game, I agree, it is pretty amazing that is comprable to the wii in terms of power. I made the comparison with SF4, but RE5 also works. It makes me wonder why there isn't many good wii games. I am not aware of any currently available phones with parallax barrier screens and the requisite dual-GPU to drive them. I'd rather play an ancient-looking great game than a photo-realistic piece of shovelware. Bloody hell. Don't burn my house down. No need to get so angry. It's only a game machine. I am suprised you are pulling the "great graphics don't make a game" argument while also defending the fact that 3D is something it has over smart phones given the 3D is a graphics thing. Not only that, but being down on power could be an issue as it limits what you can do. That goes double if it's drawing the screen twice and don't match the specs of a machine made for internet instead of games. It's here people bring up the Silent Hill argument of games graphics, but as I said in my fear reveiw, a monster jumping out of the shadows is scary, a man made of wheatabix leaping out of a well lit corner isnt. Finally, I don't see why you are getting so defencive when I match my concern with the fact I find it amazing this thing has the power of a wii. The wii has the conduit and metroid prime. Games that are pretty good graphicly, but the real example is games like CoD, Resident Evil, and so on. Simply put, my pet genres of FPS and Horror are big on Wii and DS. Add in the anolog stick and this raises the possablity of decent FPS and Horror on 3DS. What if they bring out Demenium on this thing? 3D Horror FPS with good control. What if they bring out games like Hybrid? (5th cell loves DS) Not to mention the unreal engine has some REALLY annoying things in it. I'm excited for the 3ds anyways, I like 3d, and at least a few of the games are making me happy to look forward to, (StarFox and Paper Mario especially) Yep. It's a good engine compaired to others I've used when it comes to mapping, but blimey that engine has issues. Some of the upgrades they made to it are interesting. http://www.giantbomb.com/the-unreal-engine-3-samaritan-demo/17-3887/ I wonder if they can get that running real time on Xbox. id Tech 5. That's what I'd like to see on it. If I had Twitter I'd shoot carmack a question about that.
Guest Mr. Nintendo
Why is it that they haven't ported RE5 to Wii yet? It could be for one of the following reasons: 1. The game has too much graphics for the Wii to handle. If the game were to be released for the Wii, it would be heavily modified for the console...and it probably would not be good because the graphics could get reduced, the framerate would drop and much of the game's content would be removed. Look at Dead Rising: Chop till you drop and compare it to Dead Rising, you'll notice the difference quickly. 2. It was meant to be a Xbox 360 + PS3 exclusive title. 3. Not many people liked RE5 as much as they liked RE4. While I am waiting to get my hands on the 3DS, there aren't realy many games that appeal to me now other than DOA: Dimensions... The game is also on PC.
Steve
1.- They were surely lazy, not to say, they "thought" the "hardcore" breed moved to the "big" consoles. 3DS has about the same power as the wii, give or take (dont remember) 2.-They go where the sure money is, but what sabre said. 3.- RE4 = action/horror. R5 = more action than anything else, kinda doesn't fit as a RE title. No wonders why they are rebooting the series.
Sabre
They are re-booting resi? LINK PLZ! Seriously, you can't 'reboot' resi. They have tried before, but it never sticks. Let's be honest, it is such a revolutionary series, and the plot so tangled and over the top it's awesome. 1.- They were surely lazy, not to say, they "thought" the "hardcore" breed moved to the "big" consoles. 3DS has about the same power as the wii, give or take (dont remember) I think it's a bit of both. Better in some ways, worse in others.
Steve
One of the resident evil games coming to the 3DS (not the mercenaries one) is "Attempting" to reboot the series to its "horror" root. I'm not sure if they mean "we are back to zombies" or "no more crazy shooting". But you probably already know that xD, not full reboot, but just gameplay reboot. Because when comparing to cellphones, it was hardware-to-hardware and price. It was a response to the claim that cellphones can "do more" at the same or less price. I don't see how stating a couple of facts about hardware makes me a hypocrite when I later mentioned my opinion that graphics don't make games later on. Facts and opinions, apples and oranges, etc.

Fire Yoshi
I'm probably just going to wait for the color red to come out. I'm nit-picky when it comes to colors for a handheld. =P Besides, the games I really want, like Paper Mario (3D?) aren't coming out for a while. So maybe the wait will pay off. Star Fox Runner
The only reason I went and preordered a 3DS is because I just want to make sure that I have it. Apparently they're predicting a shortage of 3DSs after launch. Whether it's true or not I'm not taking any chances. The 4 games I want for it are Resident Evil Revelations, Kid Icarus Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D, and Ocarina of Time 3D. Sadly they aren't coming out until summer. But I think Pilotwings will be good enough for me to start with.

Sometimes unexpected demand in genuine, alot of the time (such as with the 3DS) they know how many they will sell on launch day and will make less. Just enough to choke supply and thus create increased demand. eg. Let's say I will sell 100 GBAs. I make 80 GBAs and say to buy early to avoid disappointment. All 80 sell, but because they are a coveted item, Now 150 people want to buy.

DZComposer
OK, so I have my 3DS. Here is the scoop: The 3D actually makes the graphics look better to me. The 3D, even on full, is more subtle than the 3D you get with glasses-based tech. Also, it looks more like you are looking into it rather than things popping out of it. The added depth, though, improves the visuals nicely. It doesn't feel overdone and gimicky to me. One thing to note, though. Because it is a parallax-barrier screen, you have to be looking pretty much straight into it, or else you will see the barrier (blackness) creep into the image and ruin the effect. So, if you anticipate having to view it at an angle, turn off the 3D. Oh, and one more thing: NINTENDO Y U NO ENABLE INTERNET AT LAUNCH? I hit Internet, and I get "Web Browser will be available in a future system update." Really? It's 2011, dammit.
