Scariest game in the world

Amnesia: Dark Descent, if the topic title doesn't bring it to mind then you've probably never even heard of it.

The only thing that could possibly be more scary is actually being in a life and death situation.

It should come with a warning label;

"Do not play this game"

----------

All that said, I think the game is a work of art that would make Steven King very proud.

Me? to be honest I'm a complete woos, 30 minuets in, I heard a monster growl behind a door, I pressed the ESC key, clicked on "Save and Quit" and haven't touched the game since.

I watched someone do a live stream of that game... didn't seem THAT scary :?

I go to Maine every summer, and I still have yet to see a killer clown there. lol

Sorry, Stephen King, but Maine isn't very scary. :P

"OH YES...THEY ALL FLOAT"

I dunno, not to big into scary games myself. The only thing I've played that could be remotely scary is Eternal Darkness; only because the GAME WILL TRICK YOU INTO DELETING YOUR SAVE, SHUTTING YOUR CONSOLE OFF, ETC. If that's not scary I don't want to know what is! :)

Super Mario World :(

I KNOW THE FEELING o_O

I love scary games, they're just hard to find in a not M-rated form. My parents are uptight about that.I'mma buy Amnesia once I can afford it.

For me, Aliens vs. Predator: Gold Edition.

What makes a game scary for me isn't the creature design so much, as the creature abilities. You play that game on Director's Cut (Hard), and pick the Marine, and you step on the body of a kainde amedha (Alien), you're looking at losing most of your armour or health in half a second due to the acid blood. Plus the Aliens are resilient as all hell, capable of losing both arms and their tail and still attacking, or losing both legs and an arm and still crawling towards you to attack, all the while trailing acid behind them. Also, they don't go down in a single headshot from most weapons, as you can lace into them with a pulse rifle, and see the acid ringed bullet holes in their elongated skulls, and they keep coming.

Also facehuggers are one hit kills, any difficulty, to Yautja (Predators) and Marines, and are hard as hell to hit. The game is dark as hell with strobing lights that do not help you to see the aliens, you don't have the shoulder lamp (have flares instead, but can only have 4 out at a time), nightvision goggles that turn off your motion tracker, and the kainde amedha often have alternate paths to get you. So you try to bottleneck them through a doorway, ready to fire the second the door opens, well too bad, as the bastards just went through an air vent and dropped down behind you. Also, the bad path detection on the kainde amedha (because every surface is a possible path to you) just makes them scarier. I give this situation as an example.

You go into a room, activate a switch. All of a sudden you hear hissing and screeching, and the beep of your motion tracker going off. You toss some flares around to see the things, and hopefully silhouette the bastards. You see a tail out of the corner of your screen, so you aim there and spray a good burst, but that bastard is already dashing all over the room (due to that bad path detection), so you try and shoot it while it's doing this, and you empty your entire 99 round magazine just as it finds the path to you and comes at you with a passion, so you have to avoid it while you slap a new mag in there. Granted it doesn't take long, but those claws hurt. You slap a new mag in, line up the shot, and spray a good burst into the chest, but instead of just going down, its upper body explodes into little, acid spewing fragments, each one capable of causing decent damage, so you have to avoid those while dealing with any others that come into the room.

Also, the enemies keep coming until you complete your mission, there's no, "Kill a few, take a break, kill some more, take a break." It's do or die.

No game has given me such an adrenaline rush from flight or fight response. Not DOOM 3, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dead Space, none of em. Granted the creatures in those games may look more intimidating in those games, but they're as dangerous as cranky puppies compared to the kainde amedha.

Also, that's just the drones, we haven't gotten into the Praetorians or the Predaliens. Those are by far worse.

And playing the Yautja doesn't make em much better.

You hear me playing AvP Gold, and I'll be chanting a mantra of, "Fuck shit fuck shit shitty shitty fuck fuck" as I fight the things.

Also forgot to mention that your M41A Pule Rifle can jam, which you have to let off the trigger to unjam. Just there to keep people from, "spraying and praying." Pretty effective for a scare when you're shooting at a kainde amedha running down a hall at you after you just reloaded, and you fire a few rounds and hear "click-click-click."

Most of the games I played are really not scary. (Maybe it's because I don't get scared easy.)

The only time I ever got surprised was in Dead Space 1. Maybe I should give Amensia: Dark Descent a shot...

Amnesia, Fatal Frame 2 and 3.

On a personal level, treasures of the Deep for PS1. So far it's the only game I just can't play.

The Suffering for the PS2.

Just the thought of being in a haunted prison on an island filled with demonic creatures and freaky hallucinations sounds kind of scary. I can't even play it without having the lights on. But I have to admit, it is fun to play.

Dude, excellent choice for a scary game. The AvP series are all pretty good about scaring ya right nice.

Perfect example from my experiences: The first time through the Marine level where you are trailing a Pred in AvP 2. That mutha lover appears, semi-cloaked, from the PERFECT spots; and all the scripted events during that mission really ratchet up the chill-o-meter. Love it.

ALso: ReDeads are freaky as... The way they like shriek and Link gets frozen and stuff. Eat Sun's Song ya freaks! k_e_angry.gif

The Suffereing: Awesome game, freaky game; all for the reasons that Dub already stated.

And I just may have to check out this Amnesia game :)

Love Horror! k_e_smile.gif

Probably because it's still the scariest game to me for the same reasons it used to be. Imagine that.

Also, not a "rant" as much as it is a "rave," as I'm not ranting about how something is bad, but raving about how it's good.

AvP 2 was decent for jump scares, shame the whole game was scripted though. If you liked that I really recommend AvP Gold, which is on Steam as "Classic." It's scare factor is much higher than 2, imo, as 2's scares are just jump scares happening in the same place each time. Once you learn what is and isn't dangerous, it loses the scare, and once you learn where the kainde amedha will come from (since they come from the same place each time), it becomes less scary and more actiony. Don't get me wrong, it scared me like hell the first time through (After you jump down the vent you have to cut the lock off as a Marine in the first level, and land in the tunnel where you open the door to the outside where the Yautja plasmacasters everything, I ended up freaking at the motion tracker picking up the door and shooting everything except the ceiling, that motion tracker messed with you more than the AvP Gold one), but AvP Gold doesn't play the same way through each time, and that game is evil about things. I'm currently stuck on my Marine and Yautja missions in Gold because each one has something I haven't been able to overcome thing time yet.

Two of the scariest games I ever played were the first Silent Hill and the Marine campaign in AVP2.

Scariness is subjective, anyway.

On a side note:

Something that scared the shit out of me in a non-scary game was the first time I saw the airplane bug in the engine of GTAIII ( III and Vice City, in San Andreas airplanes are programmed differently ). I don't know by what it was caused, maybe by the Grav Mod ( thanks to that addon, I've seen sharks, fishes and jellyfishes flying in the sky by setting a really low gravity ), but I never used a Grav Mod for GTAIII, and the bug was still there.

Try to picture this: You're mindlessly driving in the streets without any thought in your mind and then "HOLYSHITWTFDUDE! DID THAT FURKING AIRPLANE JUST CROSSED THE STREET IT CAME OUT OF FREAKING NOWHERE!!".

Probably Silent Hill. The whole environment of the game creeped me out.

There was a game I read about where you play a girl who is looking for her family. The majority game is played on a cruise ship that sunk. It looked cool, but I can't remember the name. I think it was for the PS one. Anyone know this game?

As a horror game fan, here's my opinion on the matter.

Amnesia is way WAY overrated. The people who label it "Scariest game evar!" probley have little to no experience with horror games. While horror is extremely subjective, amnesia isn't as good as something like Project Zero. If you want to see why, here's a video I made just for this type of occation.

For those who don't want to watch it, the player character falls over in terror at the sight of a flag, and in one case, on seeing a barrel, yet is unphased by an invisable flesh eating monster.

I should also point out my dislike for Silent Hill 2, often considered "scariest game evar!" the game is only scary if you are afraid of symbolism. If you don't buy into the idea that these monsters represent guilt, lust, envy ect, then it's just plain rediculous.

Silent Hill 1 and Resident Evil 2 earn their classic horror status. Fear has it's moments despite lacking in threat. For those who prefer their scares grounded in reality, then Condemned 1 is the game for you. Outside of a few supernatural scenes, the games enemies are junkies, street crazies and murderers.

I have to agree with you on Silent Hill 2 not being as scary as its predecessors. Its still a great game, great story, good characters, but in my opinion one of the reasons why it wasn't as scary was because the monsters hardly didn't do anything. They didn't come after you like they did in the original Silent Hill, and if they did they were pretty avoidable. Unlike in Silent Hill: Origins when they could catch up to you and the only way to avoid or get rid of them was to go into a building. Now that is what I call creepy. But even if it wasn't as scary, Silent Hill 2 is still one of my favorite games ever......And also the fact you can use A FREAKIN CHAINSAW!!!!!
