What makes you a good RPer?

Just a question that crossed my mind and might be fun to answer and let others know how you RP. Perhaps use this thread as a way to show you know what you're doing and make people want you in your RPs

What makes you good at role-playing? What makes you like it?

As for myself:

I have a solid foundation. Meaning, I follow basic RPing etiquette and I'm an I got experience backing me. I've RPed for years.

I know what makes a good RP. Everybody know what happens to RPs that don't have a good, lasting premise that isn't a "do whatever" RP.

I have good, well-rounded characters that aren't Mary-sues. If there's some trait one of my characters has, there's something there to explain why it's there. Oh, and they're flawed individuals. It's what makes them so good.

I'm an experienced writer. I know how to write out a good post and show what's going on with my characters, both inside and outside their heads.

How about everyone else?

Uhm....I dont mind RPing but im not always on the computer, whcih means im not around as much in an RP i preticipate in (thats partially what sunk the RP i made months back). BUT the charatcers i make usually have a troubled past, or "something wrong" with them. they also seem to reflect parts of me sometimes. Just to give them something to go on and make them "cool".

I believe that RPing is a good start to being a good RPer. :P

I would not say that I am a 'good' roleplayer, but a decent one, BUT i do enjoy the character creation, and the plots I can put them in. Like you I write, a lot, maybe not experienced, but people who have read my stuff like it. I constantly talk things over with people involved in certain roleplays to make it seem more juicier.

that is a most perfect tactic. :)

Basically parroting the original post here, but I've done it forever now. I've had one continuous RP running for over four years straight now and I've done it long before that one, too.

I'm fairly objective in criticism and judgement, so I know good literature and structure are vital to RPs nearly all the time. lolrandum fight RPs where you just do crap between asterisks does not a good roleplay make.

I've had a grand total of about 3 characters with only one of them making a constant appearance, and thus she's got years of building on her and a very nice amount of depth that doesn't rely on just saying what -I- think.

Well that right there is a big plus in my book.

I love it when people have more character bios than what they know what to do with. </sarcasm>

I'm a firm believer that having a good character to start is a good thing, having a deep, well-developed character that's been in many RPs is even better. It's one thing to post things up in a bio that's full of fluff and another thing entirely to actually apply and use said character.

What exactyl do you mean by that Gene? "Apply and use said character", can you give an example?

Alright.

Let's say you have a fresh character, never been used in a RP. You have all these ideas and whatnot that go into a bio. And this bio is huge, filled to the brim with all sorts of small tidbits, and backstory, and a lot of other stuff.

While I can't really list any explicit examples off-hand. There are character details that look good on paper, in a bio, but have really little to do with a RP, unless it's a detail that is specifically invoked and needed. Basically I'm trying to say people come up with a lot of details that hardly get used or mentioned in practice and can clutter up a good bio. When you RP with a character, you put them in situations you might not expect and have them react.

You learn to see what details and facts are important to your character because they're details that get USED. And the other details that sit in your bio and do nothing but look pretty? They really aren't useful. That is what I call fluff. And fluff is bad.

He means having a fully three dimensional character with tons of layers, with everything fleshed out. A lot of RP characters end up just being "puppets" for a player rather than a fully developed character in a fantasy setting, and that becomes more obvious the more characters someone has. They begin to start seeming the same.

Both of you make excellent points. I think i may have done that....but really cant tell becasue i havent used them very much becasue the RP i used them in is inactive, not to mention i am redoing some of them.

You learn by doing it. It's not something you see and figure out in your first RP.

Role-playing is kinda like a skill, with a lot of other things that go with it.

You have to be a decent writer. You have to know how to make a good characters. Know how to use said character and know how to have them react realistically within the confines of a RP.

When you have two or three people come together with really great characters and the skills to use them and craft a real, gripping story as you play. When you get to the point where you blur the line between role-playing and collaborative fiction. THAT is RPing at it's finest.

Yes. "Realism" is a nice word. I hate characters who are invincible ninjas with incredible charisma and sex appeal who can stare down armies stoicly before going Dragon Ball Z and kicking ass. That's just- no. That's a boring character in much the same way videogames are boring with a gameshark.

So... In layman's terms: a Mary Sue.

I'm pretty meh at forum role playing, my sentence structure sucks and I have a hard time conveying my thoughts into text.

My strengths as an RPer is my ability to play anykind of role and any kind of charecter.

Im a writer so i make sure i have a decent amount of lines per my posts

For my Charecters, i make a lot of them just in case i need them, but only use around 1 or 2 of em.

I cant spell, and my grammer made Arashikage Cry.

I dont mind being the villan, or having my buttox whooped by the mary sues Player Charecters

For my age and grade,I'm a good writer, but I often steal ideas or come up with some ideas that no one's ever thought before.

I don't consider myself to be a good RP'er and so far I don't think I got one of my RP's off the chopping block, and I'm not really dedicated.

When I RP,my characters are often romatacized and portrayed as a muscular strongman, although my RP characters are still flawed, they are the digital incarnations of my wants and desires, meaning that they are what I wanna be,strong, brave, and the ability to get a chick quick and easy.

I am not a strong writer, but I use many different sensory words to make the audience feel at home.

I believe that my interactions with characters in RP's do not represent me,or my personality, the real me is energetic, eccentric at points, but a friendly and funny guy that can take a shitload of insults.

Dont know if this counts, but I'm not protective of my characters. Most RPs I see die have it because a character tries to look like the biggest bad arse in the room.

For what it's worth, I like author insert characters in RPs provided they dont go to mary sue levels. I'm not into the "Let's do crossover x" or just recreating a story from something else. I quite like what if stories.

I like to be an Anti-hero or a villian. I also like to appear good, if only to stab you in the back when you least expect it (sometimes). Its really fun to make the Player characters of others fight or work hard to survive. I dont know why i like to be a villian, its just really fun.

I can also try to adapt to whatever the other RPers' characters may be doing so i try not to deviate from the course of the story...i guess.
