Fluxy
I knew about this since it was released, but now that I have some spare moments, felt it would make for a good topic. The man is Timothy Brown, and if you wanna learn more about the studies, here is a good link. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110603/us_yblog_thelookout/first-man-functionally-cured-of-hiv Basically by a risky procedure, by bone marrow transplants, Timothy was able to get bone marrow from one of the very few HIV immune people in the world. [if you don't know why they are immune, it is basically because on their Helper T cells, the hormone that HIV attacks, they are missing one of the two receptors needed for HIV to infect and overall, take over your immune system] By taking this transplant, his immune system was able to let his own Killer T cells attack and destroy the HIV virus. Of course this procedure is -very very- deadly, as that transplant could easily have killed him as well, and we can't really do it for everyone who has HIV, but it is a start for a cure to this epidemic. Dr. Orange
Interesting. Being saved from HIV, Or posability of Death. But finally a (Risky, Deadily) Cure.
"User"
I heard about this a while back. Kind of confused a lot of professionals at first but indeed, it is a start to hopefully finding a cure but a heck of a lot more research into this area is required. Of course, medicine has come a lot way since the 70's. If you can afford to pay for the drugs that treat HIV you can easily live to be 80 years old or whatever the average lifespan is. Redeemer
Well, this is a start. And I can see now that this treatment won't be available to everyone, not just because of the low success rate, but it's a very expensive procedure and you know what health services are like... Or at least, the NHS over here is pretty much like that. Certain treatments for various illnesses are only readily available for people selected using what has been nick-named the "postcode lottery". The unlucky people who don't get access to the treatment they need are put on a very long waiting list, which often takes several months to answer. I'm glad this thing worked. It means we're a step closer to tackling HIV and AIDS. I hope Africa gets access to this treatment.
Sabre
We need a synthetic, reproducable and cheap version for it to be effective.
Xortberg
We need a synthetic, reproducable and cheap version for it to be effective. Thank you, Captain Obvious. But yeah, despite the problems with this procedure that Sabre helpfully pointed out, this is a pretty massive step in the right direction. I remember all those sex ed videos saying there was no cure at all for AIDS or HIV, and now we've got a proto-cure that's only going to be refined, hopefully, into a somewhat affordable procedure. Pretty exciting stuff.
Harlow
Bless him and the medical institutes... Well, I heard recently that, if infected via blood (transfusions, needles) you have 3 days since the infection to bombard your body with medicines and it apparently the virus doesn't get to AIDS. An relative of mine has also "stalled" his HIV by bodybuilding http://www.nelsonvergel.com/testimonials.htm Anyway, this is a massive step. And, as Sabre said, they need to filter and produce those T-Cells...

That is if your lucky, actually. There are some cases where the virus gains an immunity to the medicine quicker, well, a lot of cases, and people aren't thought to live that long at all easily. --- And yes, this method -by no means- can be done to many more people. This was simply a long test in hopes for it to lead and cause for a easier step to an easier one, to the point where it will be either a simple procedure, or just taking a pill or two. And it's mainly just inspiring, like Xort said; We defeated something that everyone said was unstoppable. And like User said, we have a way of gainging huge medical knowledge in just a short ammount of time. We'll be 'A-Okay' soon enough. Still gotta practice safe sex out there You bunch of furries. I thought HIV killed you by destroying your immune system? My concern with the news is that people might stop caring. That said there have been stories of people who deliberatly infect others with HIV either as a kink or as a murder plot. Again, don't know if that's true, just something I heard. Again, don't know if that's true, just something I heard. HIV doesn't kill you. What it does is take over your Helper T cells and make them stop functioning, and only produce more of the virus. Helper T cells are what coordinate B cells and Killer T cells all throughout your body, and those two cells are the ones that are the actual 'defenders' so to speak, of disease and infection to the body. B cells make antibodies against foreign/non-self receptors, and Killer T Cells literally eat, or explode infected cells. With the Helper T Cells only making more HIV virus, and not coordinating the defenders, your immune system -completely- shuts down at a soon point, and thus the formation of actual AIDS. At that point, even the simplest of colds can, and more than likely will, kill you. HIV doesn't actually kill you, just bring your fortress walls to a crumble. I did -huge- studies on this for class, I know what I is talkin about. XD

Well, I do know that a man has been convicted of mudered bc he infected his sexual partners and didnt tell them he had HIV : http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/hiv-positive-man-convicted-of-murder-apologizes-to-victims/article2035076/print/ But its not so much a murder plot as not giving a shit. And I have a hard time believing that someone could "stall" the onset of AIDS by body building :S I don't see how it would help. But of course, I'm not an expert by any means, I only know a little about it because of a relative who went through it many years ago. OT: I'm so glad to see some forward momentum on this project I had heard about those who had an immunity to the virus, but I'd never gotten a chance to look farther into it. Well, he started bodybuilding because at first he was scared of the serious weight loss some of his friends had because of HIV. It wasn't the main cause, since he also had volunteered for countless therapies and medicines. But he's fine, he's living happy in Houston. Fact: On Biohazard levels, HIV is on Level 2 of 4 due to it's low risk of infection on a laboratory. In comparison, E. Coli is on level 1; Malaria and Yellow fever are on Level 3; Dengue hemorragic fever and Ebola are on Level 4.
