Wii Slim?

Nintendo has announced that they are releasing a redesigned model of the Nintendo Wii. So far its only confirmed in Europe without a price point, but it will be a smaller, slimmer version of the console. It will include 1 Wii motion+ remote, Wii Sports and Wii Party. However...the redesign is not able to play any Gamecube games.

This redesign in my opinion is terrible. The Wii was pretty small as it was and this is removing the functionality at the cost of minor esthetics? Whats the point? If Nintendo wanted the award for most redundant hardware design that award still goes to Sony's new PSP with out wifi.

I agree, it sucks that they sacrificed NGC backward compatibility to get a few centimeters away... :/

WTF? This makes no sense.

Iwata has lost his damn mind. I guess he wants to combat the Osbourne Effect, but sheesh. This thing is going to drop less than a year ahead of WiiU. I don't get it.

In a way, this reminds me of the Sega 32X; it was too late to grab many customers before the Sega Saturn and didn't really add much to the experience. Go figure :P.

Really though, the Wii was small enough to begin with, and most people won't be buying a Wii knowing that Nintendo's next-gen console is on its way, let alone Sony and Microsoft's current/next-gen iterations.

Sort of makes me think this is kind of a midpoint in a sense - the Wii Slim (if it even gets called that least they get sued by Sony) is the probably the precursor to the Wii U. smaller, and not to mention lacks some of the stuff the older model has. Basically seems like Nintendo's going the way of Sony - the latter had the PS2, then a PS2 slim, PS3, PS3 slim..you get the idea. in any case that's my view of things.

However I agree with DZ on one thing - thumbs down for the backward compatability and the lack of GCN controller ports. that part doesn't make any sense; despite the new size you can -still- fit those things somewhere.

They did this with the GBA Micro and the DSiXL. What I don't get is why. The wii is hardly a brute of a machine like the PS2/3 and Xbox were.

And who bought a Gameboy Micro with the DS launch right around the corner?

Also, the DSi/XL was just too big. Haven't seen many of those either. Regular DSi, on the other hand...

This is a retarded idea. They're wasting there time IMO. WHY NINTENDO? WHYYYYYYYY?!

The Wii is about as compact as you can get it already, making it smaller is just a waste of time. Plus removing the GameCube functionality takes away an important part of the console.

In my opinion, Nintendo not releasing the console in the Americas really isn't that big of a loss, especially with Wii U right around the corner.

what is the POINT of this? it's the same as the wii, but no NGC? you gotta be kidding me! had Nintendo finally gotten DESPERATE for ideas than to make the same system, only smaller and minus the awesome GC features? apparently they have, though the Wii U looks cool, this is the SAME WII! only smaller and less awesome.l i give the idea a thumbs down

But then, the Saturn was a flop anyways.

Here's hoping the Wii-U doesn't go the same way; this whole thing seems eerily familiar O_o

The interactivity of the Wii-U controller is nothing like what the Dreamcast tried to envision... So I don't think their fates are twined! :P

(But I'm still a bit dubitative about it though...)

no i don't like this idea. Its almost as bad as the wii-u. The wii should have already had HD quality. Nintendo needs to branch out and get more games is all. God knows enough people bought a wii, just get better games!

But the Saturn is still awesome.

Love this idea. Nintendo wipes out a chunk of the Wii's gaming library in one fell swoop. And the sad fact is that there are a bunch of games for the GameCube that still offer more playability than a large proportion of games made for the Wii.

I believe that when it eventually does get a price tag, it will be under £100. It will mean that the casual people who have still held out will be a little more tempted than before. No NGC backwards compatibility means it will be cheaper to make but I doubt the casuals really played many GameCube games. I don't see it selling like hot cakes but as a way to milk just a bit more money from the now very outdated tech.

Sheesh, I was pissed when the newer models of PS3 removed PS2 compatibility, now this? That's going to far.

Or as Sonic would say it: "That's NO goood!"

Don't even get me started on how the Wii is a Dreamcast rip-off. They even reference it in Twilight Princess. Remember how you could use that DC fishing rod in that one fighting game? Try using the fishing rod against Ganondorf. It's Miyamoto's way of saying "Problem, Sega fans?"

A slim wii, easy to break. I don't think it's really needed, the wii is small enough anyway
