Star Fox 64 3D Out Now!

Star Fox Runner

Recommended Posts

I already picked up my copy of SF643D. Though I haven't been able to play the main game just yet, I spent some time in the multiplayer mode. They allow for play against bots! I'm happy about this as I thought adding bots would have made 64's and Assault's multiplayer modes much better.

And there's one thing I have to mention. They gave the training mode a graphical overhaul, it looks like your flying through a bunch of holograms!

And they gave the training raccoon a voice! And I have to say, he sounds DAMN sexy! Listen for yourself when you pick it up!

More on the main game later.

I've had the game about 10 hours now and it looks great, but I've not had a chance yet to play thoroughly, just the odd bit off dogfighting in the back of a Taxi. The controls seem a bit odd at first but I'm starting to warm to them, just got my ass handed to me on Solar though, which is not at all like me :P

And I too noticed the Raccoon guys voice, I did hear they were giving him a voice, but never in 100 years did I imagine he would sound like that! :D

Come on guys! We want videos, feedbacks, audio tracks... stuff! \o/

What I found interesting is that they changed some of the dialog. Such as when Falco says "Hey Einstein, I'm on your side!", instead he says "Hey genius, I'm on your side!" This makes more sense well.....because Einstein was never in the Lylate system. How could they have gotten the term if they've never been to Earth?

Come on guys! We want videos, feedbacks, audio tracks... stuff! \o/

Well....Its kind of hard to get stuff like that from a portable device. Unless you want video recordings of a close-up screen a.k.a "Shot on Shiteo."

There are a few playthroughs on YouTube already, I think there's a (badly shot) full run of the Easy path up there as well as training, interesting to note however are the credits. Whilst people claim it's the original cast, only 4 of the names there I actually recognise, they are Mike West (64 Fox), Lysaa Browne (64 Slippy), Jay Ward (Brawl Wolf) and, oddly, Dan Owsen who did the few voice samples of Fox in the SNES game. Maybe I missed something, but there were key actors missing from the list, how odd :/

Have all regions got the art on the inner cover or is it just certain countries? We have here but I'm not so sure about elsewhere.

I am in love with this game. I had doubts that it could actually be at the same level as the original, but this turned out to be better than I thought. The 3D nor the controls seem to be an issue for me, much to my surprise. I keep replaying through just to see every single little graphical change they've done.

About Dan Owsen, they probably put his name there because he made the "good luck" voice sample, that's from the snes game.

Phenomenal: fantastic in every aspect. I'll have to get used to the controls & new voice-acting ("Hey, 'GENIUS'-"?!), but I'm warming up to both already after 5 hours.

Biggest gripe by far: Andross' dialogue. Were they even trying when they dubbed his laughing? Seriously, when you get to him at the end of Venom's tunnels, Andross' head laughs for 3-4 seconds; the voice-actor just goes, "hahaha," abruptly in half a second. Its ridiculous.

After my post about my thoughts on the series and the tsunami of comments against my views, I thought, "Hell with it, let's see what all the fuss is about." I traded in some games that I wasn't playing anymore and paid £2.85 for Starfox 64 3D and you know what, I am seriously glad I didn't pay anymore cash than that.

I'll start off with the positive stuff first. The controls are not bad at all. They utilize the 3DS' button layout well. I still need to get used to the gyro controls but they seem to respond OK. The only thing I'm not getting on with is using the touch screen to answer messages. Because you're not using the stylus during game play, it means you get finger marks on the bottom screen. Just feels like something they threw in to make it a proper DS game.

The way the game looks is very nice. It's amazing to see just how far we've come when a console you hold in your hand can make a game look better than the original home console it was released on. The 3D feature looks good but correct me if I'm wrong, they've taken away the in-cockpit view. That would have worked really well with the gyro controls and helped to make it feel like you were in the action more.

And here is the first stumbling point. The game offers you the choice to use the gyro but if you are using the 3D feature, you won't be able to see the screen as moving the 3DS all over the place obviously affects how your eyes comprehend the screen so you have to choose one or the other.

Another thing I am not liking so far are the characters voices. They aren't as bad as they were in parts of Assault but they just aren't that good. I can't believe I'm saying this but... the original voices were better. I know people have heard them to death but Fox and Falco really don't sound right at all. They don't have the get up and go urgency like they did before. As for Peppy and Slippy... Slippy definitely sounds worse than in the original game by somehow being more high pitched and Peppy sounds like a young voice actor trying to imitate an older voice actor. And the training stage raccoon's new voice reminded me of Panther Caruso.

When I found out that there was only local multiplayer and no online functions, I began to wonder what exactly I was paying for? OK, so you couldn't customize the battles in Command but this is 2011. The 3DS offers the same functions as a DS. Just feels like a glaring omission. And when I do get some friends together to play it, I'm finding a way to turn off that camera feature. Seems a bit redundant when you can just look up at someone if you want to.

So, is it a bad game? No. It's a solid title that plays as well as it did on the N64. But that's the problem I have with it. It doesn't do anything majorly different to the N64 title other than look prettier and I seriously do not believe that constitutes a price tag of £35. You could get a used N64 with controllers and a copy of the original game for about the same amount. I understand it's supposed to be a reboot for the series to get newer fans in, and I know if someone new comes to the game they will enjoy it so it serves it's purpose. But for the older fans, there's really not a lot you haven't seen or done before.

I can see why it has been getting scores of around 8/10 (and I believe IGN really had the rose tinted specs on or took a bribe when they gave it a 9) and considering the fact it is supposed to bring new fans to the series, I think 8 is just about right, but Nintendo has to do a lot more still to restore any faith I have in themselves, let alone the series.

Most of that is opinion Rik, so I'll just say this about the touch screen being literally that:

It's rather status quo for 3DS games. A lot of them say don't use the stylus because it distracts you and takes too long, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D being one since the touch screen is your weapon select/item use. It goes so far as to have you touching the screen, then sliding your fingers around to look around in game without having to turn your character.

Also may I remind that as SF64 was a good game, even if SF643D is a rehash it's still the highest quality thing out of the series since, well... SF64.

I already got my copy. I'm enjoying every minute of it.

I prefer playing the game with the analog stick circle pad. Don't really like the gyro controls, I always have them off, but probably I just need to get used to them. The only thing that annoys me, is that I have to touch the... well, the touch screen... to answer incoming calls.

Does Katt's hotness counts as a Pro too?

As long as there's something appealing to the furries than yes, it does! :-)

I don't have a 3DS myself so I probably won't end up picking this up.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. Looks like we are not going to make a "SF-O StarFox 64 3D Tournament"-thing. ç_ç

I have a very blunt question for you guys, from someone that doesn't know if he should buy the game : Is it worth it to pay 169 + 39 $ (before tax) for this game ?

It's really hard to answer that question, I think it's all a matter of different point of views.

I payed 179€ for the 3ds, and then 44€ for SF643D, and I wasn't even sure if it was worth it. Then, I started to familiarize with the console itself and all its functions and I was like "Yeah, cute. Not bad. Nice technology.". Then, I plugged SF643D inside the 3ds, updated the console ( the update comes with the game, don't worry about Internet connection ) and started blowing stuff up. I was like "HELL YEAH THIS REMAEK3D-THING IS FFFKN AWESOMEEAAARGH!!".

So yeah, for my point of view, it was worth it.

You can still wait for the price to drop if you are not sure.

Unless you're a die hard fan of Star Fox 64 or Ocarina of Time alone, I would honestly say no.

But with all the first party games coming out this holiday, I would say that those would most likely justify the cost down the road. So with that in mind I would say yes.

Is a remake of Starfox 64 worth buying a 3DS alone? No, that's a lot of money to play a slightly prettier version of a game that I'm sure everyone on this sight has played before. Is the 3DS worth buying as a console in itself though? I've had mine almost a month and I'd say undoubtedly so, and Starfox is certainly a game all 3DS owners should have, I've not put it down all day and already have medals on Corneria and Fichina (yeah, they changed the name back!).

So in conclusion, I personally wouldn't buy the console for this game alone, but bare in mind no single game ever made is good enough alone to warrant me buying a whole console. My judgment is that if you have a 3DS and like Starfox, it's a must buy :)

lets see, SF64(1997) got a 8.3/10 from gamestop. SF643D(2011) got a 7.5/10 from gamestop,you do the math.

BTW if theres no online, nintendo should have added more maps, cause the CPU gets boring...

But there's Wii U coming, and maybe we can expect some starfox game. I could buy the 3ds, or start saving for the Wii U ...

Just got my copy of it today, and I gotta say, it's pretty cool! I love the new voice actors. Falco sounds spot on, and slippy sounds more like a little boy then he did in the original. (Like tails in sonic colors) The graphical update is awesome. The only thing I don't care for is the gyro feature. I liked using it in ocarina of time 3D, (where your standing still) but I don't really like using it in this. It just makes the game play more difficult like the first person view did. While they're both neat ideas, I don't think they work very well.
