I prefer typing. It's easier to understand and if you missed what I wrote it's still visible. That and I'm a fairly fast typer so I won't be sitting in front of my screen on my chair all day writing a 5 word sentence.

Wow, yeah, I honestly never knew that. I do have a mic and all, but now I am curious to see how well it works first hand.

Thanks for that bit of knowledge, I'll put it to use one of these days.

This is the only reason I'd ever use earphones. They suck.

Tell me about it. I tried using earphones once and I couldn't get one of them to stay in my ear. Headphones are much better.

As for using them as microphones, one of my 12th grade teachers told us about how a student did their project using them as such. So it does work, not as well as a microphone but it still works.

That is odd.

You're not using iPhone earbuds, are you? Like, the ones with the mic in them?

As a student in audio engineering, I can verify that this little trick is in-fact quite possible.

The hardware inside earbud speakers is basically the same as any other speaker: a diaphragm connected to an electric solenoid coil that vibrates according to the electric Alternating Current pattern (the "audio signal") sent through the wire, producing a vibration in the air, which is what sound is. Just like an electric motor can be backdriven and used as an electric generator, so too can sound vibrate a speaker's diaphragm and so vibrate its solenoid coil in response to outside input: sound. This is pretty much the same process microphones use, only mics are made to pick up sound and produce the AC current pattern (audio signal). Speakers are made specifically to produce the sound, but earbud speakers are small enough that they're able to act as a mic, since the hardware inside is smaller and subsequently more sensitive to outside influence. So it's no surprise that this is possible, and that your audio quality is pretty sub-par.

CL is right. In a pinch, you can interchange them. However, with each being optimized for a specific task, don't expect to get crystal-clear sound out of it.

Thanks for posting this Starfoxchick. I'm sure it'll come in usefull to someone.
