Fan Fiction vs Original Fiction

What I wrote there was a little snarky, wasn't it? :hehe:

Yep, we're splitting teeny tiny hairs now, and it's really not worth it to get worked up.

I will still maintain that the creative aspects are not always stunted by the fact that it's fanfiction. You will still maintain that the fact that it's fanfiction inhibits creative aspects, which I do agree with under most circumstances. I'm simply not one to deal in absolutes, particularly when I consider myself an outlier.

There are always exceptions, but exceptions do not dictate the rule.

And I wouldn't say "snarky". Whiny, maybe. Melodramatic. But not snarky.

In all honesty, I'll read whatever fanfiction whenever, as long as it follows these criteria:

A. It's about something I know I can get into.

B. Is written very well, easy to understand, has a nice flow to the story, doesn't take too long for event B to move along to event C.

C. ...it doesn't die. =V

Real fiction is usually better, but there is simply not enough of it. That is why fan fiction is necessary for fans.

@ Drasny. Not enough starfox fiction in any event. BTW, how many of those books on that book shelf are NON-Fiction? (Derp!)

But as for writing quality real fiction is better. It seems the authors who have to actually get it published half ass their work less than posters on the internet.

Have you ever actually been in a library?

So what is your criteria then for "real fiction"? Btw, that's a bit of an oxymoron...

I think I remember seeing and being in one of these "Libraries" about 20 years ago - are they still around? This was before the advent of the information superhighway so I am not sure if they still exist.

I don't particularly like fan fiction, I think all writers have their own style of writing, and I like to see consistency in the way one series is written. I think the creation of original characters is better cause then you have the freedom to choose their personality, rather then taking what already exists, and then changing it to fit your needs. Same with the environment, people will write things with a different setting, often taking the world and making it slightly, "darker," which is something I don't like seeing, if the characters are cheerful and quirky, that's what I wanna expect, if the characters are dark and mysterious, that's what I want to expect.
