The rumored name is "The Zune", its main advantage over the iPod (for now) is the ability to wirelessly download via a wifi connection (be it from your home collection or a digital music store).

Personally, I think that design is fugly as hell.

Because it's from Microsoft, it will be locked to one music store format (WMA) and be riddled with DRM.

Wait...

The iPod is like that too!

This thing won't kill the iPod. Apple's marketing dept. has already established the iPod as the "collest" ""MP3 Player" on the market, despite the exsistance of cheaper, superior players.

Unless Microsoft can successfully market that this thing is "cooler" than the iPod, which I doubt can happen. Microsoft doesn't know how to advertise very well, mainly because they don't need to with over 90% of the PC OS and Office Software makets in the bag.

If this was going to be the determined rival of the iPod, then they should have jumped on this waaaaay long ago. iPod has established Video, Podcasts, Photos and music within the years it has grown on the world. Microsoft better have some high innovations to even be considered an opponent to the all powerful iPod. BTW, the downloading via wifi is neat and all that, but it's not that reliable. Plus that might be the sixth generation iPod's spiffy new feature.

I wouldn't be surprised if this thing did just as good as the XBOX 360.....which wasn't THAT good to begin with.

Not reliable? Where's that come from? It's a reliable as laptop wirelessness, or DS Wi-Fi play. No unreliability, really.

Hm...I certainly hope it doesn't only play WMAs. It should at least play MP3s as well.

And yes, there're cheaper, better things than the iPod out there. I personally go for the Flash-drive-with-MP3-playback-module deals, since that means I can put anything on it, and it'll offer a way to listen to the MP3s without a computer. Granted, the interface isn't as fancy as the iPod, but it's just as functional.

If this thing does indeed play more than WMAs (personally, I'd like WAV and/or CDA to play as well as MP3 and WMA), and is cheaper, then I think it'll definitely sell to the informed customer. If the marketing campaign does well, maybe it will indeed topple the iPod. I think it stands a chance, but we'll see.

The DS type of connectivity is different from that of a laptop. If this "Zune" will utilize the same type of Wireless Card as the DS (in which I assume) then that's not as reliable. There have been cases where you could access wireless internet from a computer but the DS couldn't pick up the signal. And there are other instances where the signal can just drop in a second. That's why I really don't like this idea for the zune.

On the other hand, if the card was made my Intel or something of that extent, then I'm all for it because I know the card's not going to falter as much. (It still could happen)

Hm...I trust that they'd make it reliable. The DS just doesn't have as strong a signal. Personally, it'd be impressive if they put in a Lynksis card in that thing. Those're pretty reliable. Of course, it'd be more expensive, but at least more justified than the iPod....

Yeah, this is Microsoft. Pssh....what was I thinking? :nervous:

They'll probably have a clear view on what they plan to do. I think within a two year span or so, they'll be up there with the iPod. But, still I think it's very difficult to try and challenge something that's been on the market for years and years with more and more innovation.

Who knows, it might be the main competitior.

You'd trust Microsoft to make something reliable? The player will probably contract a virus, die, and give you the blue screen of death...

I don't really see the point in the new feature. It's... nifty, I suppose, but ultimately rather superfluous. All it is is a new way to do something we already could do, and it doesn't strike me as being all that more convenient.

Just like I trust my car to break down every two seconds.

For the virus issue, I have yet heard of a mobile device that contracted a virus and died and when it comes to my computer I never occured to the blue screen of death either. But then again, it could always happen. My only doubt is the type of wireless card that they are planning to use and what they have to offer for the libraries of music/video. iPod's been in the game so long that you have to question how well is the "Zune" going to do.

Rant was because my parents still block stuff from me.....But somethings can be left out.....(CHOUGHYIFFCHOUGH).....But enough about that

I don't use anything like Ipods or anything because the music I listen to are from Video Games...Straight from the console...like SPC for SNES...NSF for NES....PSF for Playstation....and others.....Ipods just manly do MP3s...and those are too complicated to try and get on the little buggers...

Yeah, Ipods and the like are expensive, but nice to have. Anyway, back on topic, I reckon the design is ugly, nowhere near as nice as an ipod, the feature is clever and quite cool, but unnecessary and finally, ipod has a huge amount of publicity and is known by almost everybody, if Microsoft think they can take it down with that, they're dreaming.

heh, well the "leaders" oF Microsoft gets alittle pissy seeing many of thier employees/Staff uses thier rival's Music/media player.

(btw, I have heard that Gates got small ligths in his wallpapers, so he can change the colour whenever he wants to, Wonder how his computer(s) looks/is like...)

I dunno how good this would be, maybe some info of it isn't available yet.
