BECAUSE USER IS BABBY LOCKING THREADS ON A WHIM, I decided to take this discussion to a new venue. Here we are, folks, where we discuss whether or not typing like a a monkey in the counter point is a kickable offense or not for the reasons of being incomprehensible, annoying, and just plain disruptive.

I say, yeah, it is, if you're not motivated enough to make sure your posts aren't eyestrain, then clearly you give no fucks about the discussion at hand. If it's too hard for you to run a spellcheck, then how are we expected to put the effort you didn't into taking you seriously?

alternatively, if you actually are dyslexic or ESL or something, you should probably let people know, because there is a comically large gulf of difference between "i can't speak in a way you find intelligible" and "i won't speak in a way you find intelligible."

I agree with this. Seeing that something serious SHOULD be taken that way.

i think apologizing for things you have when you knowingly done wrong is all, http://ecdn1.hark.co...14/original.png

The irony. It burns.

Really, bro. A topic that is easily directed at you, calling you out on your horrible typing habits, and you come in an post unintelligibly? And from what I gather, it's basically a troll response anyway? In the Counter Point?

Really?

AJC, you've misused my trust. Don't push your luck any further.

Yeah, I was under the impression that AJC was indeed dyslexic.

And if I'm going to be honest, your grammar could use a fresh-up too...

AJC, the thing here is, aside from your horrible typing, I really enjoy you in the Counter Point. You're great fun to debate against, as long as we can read your posts. And it doesn't take much work to make your posts legible at all, so if you could just kick your apparently lazy ass into gear and try a little nobody would really have a problem here. You can say you're sorry, but it doesn't mean much if you don't do anything to try and right the wrong.

And if I'm going to be honest, your grammar could use a fresh-up too...

Nobody said we need perfect grammar. Uno's fine, seeing as he's perfectly legible. The problem is when someone is completely illegible, not when a few mistakes pop up here and there.

There are a lot of things on the internet in general that piss me off. I'll go over some.

Typing Like an Idiot

In a space like the Counter-Point, where we're expected to have enough maturity to carry debate often over serious subjects, there should be a standard in spelling and grammar. When you involve yourself in serious discussion, but don't make an effort to type properly, you look rediculous, and it's not as simple as "well don't like don't look gosh!" because the bulk of us at least try to consider and weigh everyone's opinions to make the debate fair, and it's really hard to do that when said opinions aren't even distinguishable from a spambot ad. If you are over the age of ten and have access to spellcheck or a dictionary, there is no excuse for poor typing, especially in a situation where intelligence and thoughtfulness is applauded. Would you hand in an essay on public healthcare or gender equality or animal welfare with spelling like that, then tell your teacher "DON'T LIKE DON'T READ" when you get a poor mark? No. So this should not be excusable.

Demanding Special Treatment

Young? Old? Gay? Straight? Ethnic? Have a high-functioning mental disorder that honestly no one would be aware about if you didn't bring it up every three seconds? You're still a person, and you should be required to act like it. Saying "well, I'm young, so I get to act like a blithering asshat" is unacceptable, and it's insulting to your age group. Yes, there are certain things to consider with certain groups of people. Maybe your fag jokes will offend gay people. Thirteen-year-olds don't have the same level of maturity as twenty-year-olds. But being that we are human beings, these are issues that can be discussed. If a kid is going LOL CHEESE IM SO RANDUM everywhere, you can still politely ask them to stop spamming, just as you can ask a kid in real life, in public, not to run up and down grocery store aisles. Courtesy transcends age, race, gender and sexuality, so it's not far-fetched to ask all these groups to have a level of respect for one another, and not to make up excuses when they do something that otherwise bothers other members of the community. Saying that you're young does not mean you are incapable of learning from your mistakes or being accountable for them. Having high-functioning Asperger's doesn't give you a free pass to constantly be rude and insulting to other community members.

The Boy Who Cried Troll

I hate the words "troll" and "cyberbully", because most often the people who use them are simply describing people who disagree with them. That guy doesn't like Krystal, you do? That's not cyberbullying. It's a disagreement. Trolling is hardly anything more than internet pranking. I might have had a bit of a trolling mindset when I drew Nigel Thornberry's head on Krystal's body. This isn't meant to cause serious psychological harm, it's goofing off, and if you are seriously offended by a joke like that then you are highly sensitive. You lose a debate? You aren't being cyberbullied. You lost a debate, it happens, move on with your life. If you say something extremely inflammatory, and people get offended, their often angry response to that is not "cyberbullying", it's cause and effect based on something stupid you said. Saying "black people suck" and then having a swarm of people reply to that in fury, you in some form deserved it and cannot cry cyberbully. Yes, I have seen this exact situation. Accept that not everyone will agree with you, you will lose arguements, and move on, like a sane human being.

And if I'm going to be honest, your grammar could use a fresh-up too...

There's a difference between "intelligible" and "speaking like actual people speak", which is not always prim and proper and "accurate".

You're making a mountain out of a molehill here. Are people cross with you? Yes. Did you do something to deserve it? Evidence points to yes. Is it the end of the world, or is it some irreversible damage that you'll never recover from? Of course not.

Simple solution to get everyone off your case: use a spell checker. Write your posts out in a word processor beforehand and use it, if you can't find one for yout browser. Use it, and once you stop posting unintelligibly, people will cease to have this problem with you.

That's it. No need for waterworks, or to take a break. Just put in a modicum of effort and this'll blow over.

Yeah, Xort and Dras, Uno's writing is a heck of a lot better than AJC's. That however doesn't mean he also can't benefit from taking a second or two to sprite things up before posting.

I do remember that the forum had a built-in spell checker several updates ago, probably before most of you joined. I found that one brilliant and used it quite a lot. I'm wondering if we can find a similar plug-in to that again...

Firefox's built-in dictionary/spell-check seems to work fine for me, though a revival of the dedicated forum spell-check would be a welcome addition provided that those who are crossing the line actually -use- it.

You are nitpicking to all hell and making an ass out of yourself. The only glaring "error" of his post was that he just wasn't capitalizing "I".

He wasn't capitalising at all as far as I can see. But whatever, I see no need to continue bickering about this.

"Bickering about this" is the point of the topic, so I don't know why you're suddenly so eager to cut it off. Uno types completely properly when he's trying to make a serious point and not making a casual response, eg. every other post in the Bullfighting topic. AJC types like shit all the time, even in formal situations. Therin lies the difference in acceptability.

I feel kinda guilty about this...

But my honest opinion is to, on the Counterpoint, try to have a clear writing. No need to be nitpicky, but try to clean your act.

Don't feel guilty about anything. Sometimes things like this end up happening to improvements can be made and rules can be clarified. In other words, it'll be better in the long run. :-)

Also, I was under the impression as well that they were unwritten rules about basic spelling, grammar, etc that I perceived as common sense when posting in the Counter Point and the Pub.

Unintelligible? Nope. Slightly hypocrite, yes.

Thanks the same...

Meh, I'm done being difficult. Appologising for following my gut-feeling folks, and then not being a big enough man to step down when User told me AJC's spelling was the result of trolling rather than lack of ability.

Also, I was under the impression as well that they were unwritten rules about basic spelling, grammar, etc that I perceived as common sense when posting in the Counter Point and the Pub.

I think I know where that was said. I'll have a quick look around and see if I can find what we agreed on.

seeing as how my entire complaint about AJC is that he can't be understood, not that he's not using perfect grammar and spelling...no, not really

I didn't really read AJC's comments, not only because his unjustified spelling at first, but he was also severely derailing the topic. When I told him and Dras about how their discussion was getting a bit off topic, he textually told me "not at all, this is the counter point". Basically "Whatever, I'll speak any random point"
