Found that thread I was thinking about in the staff area about nasty grammar and spelling. Old thread, July 2010.

We all feelt we should become a bit stricter and ask people to pull themself together more often, but refrained from putting in any grammar-nazi rules out of courtesy to our members who don't speak english as their mother toungue. Then the worst offender got banned for being an asshat, most others left when they lost interest, and we forgot all about it.

Fair enough. Didn't personally have a problem understanding neither of you, it was the eyesore-aspect I had in mind.

There must be some special cases to consider, some of them were pointed out here, some others need to be considered. For example, people that don't have English as their first language should be in one of those cases to consider.

Although we shouldn't be grammar Nazis, we could increase the etiquette here in the counter point or debate areas.

Most browsers really do the job when it comes to proper grammar, so I see no excuse when it comes to misspelling basic words. Internet l33t speak or laziness when it comes to typing (aka, shortening words) really does depend on the person and from my point of view should be left for the rec room area.

At any rate, I can at least promise this, tougher rules in the counter-point subforum.

i figured my meaning was indubitably clear already but let me just make it super duper indubitable and say that i was not getting on AJC's case for not having perfect spelling and grammar. lord knows i don't, and i hardly expect it even out of a debate section of a forum, where one would expect a little more decorum. i was getting on his case for shit like this:

y'know, times where his weird-ass typing actually obscures whatever it is he's trying to say. i don't terribly appreciate having to pick through a bunch of typos that a spellchecker would have caught either, but i reeeeeally don't enjoy having to estimate your meaning from a pile of letters and words that looks like you just transcribed a bowl of alphabet soup. and i shouldn't have to. hence my repeated use of the word "intelligible." if i can tell what the hell you're saying, fine, but often i can't even tell what the hell AJC is saying--and his refusal to do anything about it is why i called him on it.

you know thats why i raged, i did use a spell checker after dras told me my speeling was bad. most of these are examples of the earlier part of the topic in which i knew i had mispelled, i apoliagzed atlest three times for that. But then i started using a spell checker, and then after posting with spell checker four or five times, and forgive me if i use the wrong form of negative or to, i was still told i was spelling like shit. at that point there was little more i could do. i was posting at my max potetnial. then user went on to say i was trolling the whole time which is completely false! i was try to deabate legitemly and i no way was trying to casue a flame war. The topic was then locked. Milky created this topic just to tell me i needed to fix my ways even though i had been taking action to do so already. I then sad faced really hard and apologized with out useing spell checker. Xort went off on my saying i was trolling further when really i had hastly spit out a repley to this thread. an apologey. It then really made me sad when he told me i needed to take action rather then apologize. (BTW i am posting this with out spell check because i am on a computer with a crummy broswer) the ironic part was i had already been trying to improve my posts! just look at some of the thing i posted in the previos topic. i asked if my spelling was better or not and literaly went and downloaded google chrome on the spot. By now my day has sucked pretty bad, not just because of this, school was hard today. but asper said i had misused his trust D: i really look up to the staff here. you guys are all my friends and mean alot to me. When asper said that.....it really broke me. i think this topic right here was a little unnessary. it only spread drama, and a matter i thought to be closed with my apologies in the last topic and my efforts to improve my posts there. i was wrong. However this spread even further, i posted in harlow other topic about vices. yes my post was off topic but the post its self served as a question: is subject matter like this vlaid here. First thing i get" are you gonna derail another one of my topics " that kinda hurt. carrying drama from one thread to another was very unproffesional, and infact it felt a little bit like he was shuning me or judging my character on a single unorthodox action. however, i did derail this orginal topic, BUT i tried three times to steer it away from the talk of my poor grammer, and back to the orignal topic.

Now, this whole thing. yea its my fualt but how it escalated to this is beyond me and my actions.

on the other hand, if people ask you to make your posts legible and you say no, but continue to make them as though you expect us to wade into the muck of your garbled sentences and try to decipher them, then you should not be allowed into this section of the forum. the only one i ever really see doing this is you, to be honest, although in principle it applies to everyone as, y'know, a basic courtesy.

Posting properly three times does not excuse the other posts. Posting properly thirty times, maybe. But taking the time to spellcheck a scant handful of posts then expecting everyone to completely forget about the others is foolish. What more could you do? Keep using the spellchecker, which you clearly haven't. We have seen you spell correctly, so why THIS SHIT KEEPS HAPPENING (re: the rest of this post) is beyond us. It's a fix that takes time and involves you proving you can spare us the courtesy to spellcheck, not just going GUYS I CAN SPELL BETTER NOW and expecting us to believe that.

i don't even care about an apology. if you start making your posts intelligible, and keep doing it, fine, that's all i want and all i care about. it is particularly important in a forum like this, because forums are not dumping grounds for opinions in a vacuum. forums are for discussion--and discussion gets nigh impossible if we can't understand what you're saying.

i mispelled a few words and as i stated quite clearly i have no spell check on the computer i am posting from!

i could only post three time properly becuause i only got three opertunites before topic lock

I did make it into a big problem, but more importantly i tried to to slove the problem, guess what i tried to solve it by spelling corectly, so whats your problem?

My entire point was that you kicking and screaming about how you're trying harder (while still spelling every other word wrong) does not have the same effect as ignoring the situation and just beginning to actually spell properly. No drama, no trying to convince me that my telling you to use a spellcheck has you in tears. Actual progress.

edit: also, you know what else you can use when spellcheck isn't around? A dictionary.

Your computer still has some sort of Word Processor, no? Most any Windows machine comes with Wordpad at least, and I believe it has a spell checker. Type your paragraphs up in that and then copy/paste it here. Not a whole lot of hard work, just a little bit of effort.

Use Word, or the internet, or any kind of spellchecker. There are no excuses for this, the tools are there. Can't get your browser to do it for yourself? find an alternative course. Short posts, aka 2 lines, yeah, don't bother too much, but if you are going to make a long, long post, do use it. Eventually, you will get used to proper spelling and you won't need to use a spell checker.

That or you can always download/upgrade said browser.

EDIT: This is NOT only about bad grammar, it's about UNDERSTANDING as well.

Well, yes, he needs to improve his grammar immensely, so that we can make a fraction of sense out of it, but this is the most childish way I could possibly think to handle it.

And I have not looked at the other topic yet. AJC, make some sense out of what you're typing, but what are we even arguing about? I agree with a lot of you, get a good spellcheck and type things that make sense, but really, don't just gangbang a member because they can't spell to save their life.

Download one, then. Or at least read over your own posts and fix instances where you mangle a word beyond recognition, or where you replaced words with completely different ones entirely.

The point is, the counter point is SERIOUS. We NEED every debator to be clear and not have their posts be under their own debate by themselves. Period. Per. Ee. Od. Your excuses don't satisfy anyone. Justifying it appeases nothing. Fact is you're hard to understand, and to fix that, you need -one shred of effort- to find a spellchecker addon for your browser or 2 minutes to scan through your post.
