LoneWolf
I'm happy with my Dell XPS m1530 that I got for $600 refurbished. Plays TF2 on all high settings, but the 8600m GT won't hold up against most modern PC games. For image and graphic design it's great, though. I use it for a lot of video editing and it works like a charm. See if there's a newer model that has any of the Geforce 9 series GPUs and you should be good for years to come. Otherwise my comp's dual core (T8100) @ 2.1 GhZ, 4 GB of RAM, 1440x900 WXGA+ LED Backlit Display, cheap ass but good sound card, fast as hell DVD drive, and an HDMI out that I use to hook it up to my TV. It does the job for me, I'm happy with it. Better than my shitty Dell Pentium 4 piece of crap I used to use.
EchoFox
Lenovo ThinkPad T420? They're usually packing i5 CPU's, I believe they can play some games, I'm pretty sure a friend of mine plays TF2 on his (albeit probably not on high) and, being a ThinkPad, has very good build quality. The X series of ThinkPads is very good, too, being similar to the T4xx range, but in ultraportable form factors.
Psygonis
+1 to EchoFox. Oh, and if you wanna give a second youth to your current computer, format the hard drive clean and install a Linux OS on it! (Or even better, a Server-type Linux OS on it, and leave it plugged through Ethernet to your modem/router to have a free internet server*!) *: Some software work required... :D
