DZComposer
Sunday's Incident was definately a point of history for SFO, albiet a bad point of history. Not only due to the trolling and subsequenc shutdown of registrations, but I was broswing the server logs and found out this tidbit: Top Five referring Domains URL | # of requests http://forum.starfox-online.net/ | 814,768 http://starfox-online.net/ | 678,470 http://www.starfox-online.net/ | 13,633 http://www.somethingawful.com/ | 2,109 http://en.wikipedia.org/ | 1,936 Arwing Landing, Dwight's Krystal Site, Google, and Yahoo round out the top 10. SA also had a thread about us: http://forums.somethingawful.com/ | 127 This is the biggest traffic spike in SFO.net history. SA is now responsible for more hits than any other site off of the SFO.net domain, and the fourth largest total hits domain (form.starfox-online.net is #1). Wikipedia was the former holder of SA's "title." Here are graphs showing this visually: Hour 1 = Jul 15, 2006 01:00 - 01:59 system time Hour 72 = Jul 18, 2006 00:00 - 00:59 system time spike 1 = Hr. 23 Jul 15, 2006 23:00 - 23:59 system time spike 2= Hr. 40 Jul 16, 2006 16:00 - 16:59 system time Don't worry. This is not going to make us go over on bandwidth. We have plenty. The past seven days have only caused less thatr 2 gigs of bandwidth. Our plan supports 500 gigs/year (I think, they never specified that), which would round to about 41/month. Not even close. ^_^
Zicka
Some of us (namely me) can't access The SA website. Would there be any way to quote or screen capture the thread or something?
TakeWalker
I'm not seeing this thread, after a cursory glance. What's the title?
DZComposer
SA has 2 forum threads about us. The first thread is locked behind their registrered users filter, so I couldn't read it (I am not going to spend $10 on that place) If one of you has an SA account, you can view it here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1957769 The other is viewable to non-regs, and is basically them pointing out that we locked up tight and then a couple of them them making fun of the attention SA users thread I put in announcements. (I knew I should have locked that sooner....) I deleted that threadm BTW. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1966284

EvolutionSFox
At least they're able to speak in sentences. I'm glad they have a peace of mind, some of them anyways.
DZComposer
It is important to note that not all SA Goons are trolls, but there are enough of them. I don't think SA's staff understand what a pain trolls coming from their articles are for small sites like us. I agree that a fourm admin should be able to deal with a few idiots, but when a situation like this develops where you get five of them in two hours and don't know when it will stop that the operator of a small forum has to do something, or else hours and hours could potentially be spent micromanaging the problem. Just the cleanup and reg closure caused me to only get 3 hours of sleep that night. But, they have a huge userbase, which undoubtedly brings a larger number of idiots. I know they can't controll their users, but as a common courtesy, they should not post direct links, and preferrably not even the site's name. After all, they are having their fun at the site's expense. I still have not recieved an answer to my e-mail. :/
TakeWalker
I don't think they really care, even the ones who seem reasonable enough.
