Namulith
They show up at Fortuna. If they are all shot down, then nobody shows up at Bolse. If anybody is not shot down, then they come over to Bolse. Even if there's only 1 of them (such as Andrew). Now, if one goes to Venom II in a route that has Fortuna in it, then that would make 2 fights. The thing is, the boss fight is set up so that all of them show up, even if they were shot down. Wolf's bandages point towards them being fought at Fortuna and not being killed, unlike Bolse. And yet, even if you skip Fortuna Wolf still has his bandages. Pointing to a hurting at Fortuna. So, I'm wondering what the developer intentions were in regards to Star Wolf. Was it considered that Star Wolf would be met twice in every route (hence the bandages)? Or was it laziness/lack of time/other?
Furygun81
The idea is (regarding canononity) that the proper route is all of the 'Hard'er routes (CA-SY-AQ-ZO-SZ-A6-VE), which presumably means that Star Wolf were fought before the events of the game. Maybe a dogfight during the few years that passed between James' death and Andross' invasion. I always thought that the best path was (CA-ME-FO-SX-MA-A6-VE) because you fight Star Wolf twice, giving actual reasons to why Star Wolf is damaged (Leon has an artificial eye). A lot of the Star Fox series' is left up to the player's imagination, spawning many debates like this very one here.
Drasiana
Yeah, I think Fury's pretty accurate there. Well, we know the team didn't actually die based on following games, so through the magic of science fiction "aren't dead unless you see the body (and even then)" rules, any route could be canon :V I do think the intention was to meet them twice, though. It's more dramatic that way. My headcanon has all the levels being canon though, just in an episodic format like a tv show or something.
Namulith
Looking back, Star Fox 2 in contrast to SF64 had Wolf be the only one who runs away instead of exploding when dealt with. It's like it was planned for only Wolf to be a reoccurring enemy in the series back in the days of SF2.
Splinter Sensei
Furygun has a really good answer, and theres not much I can add on top of that. However in my opinion I think the most canon route would be CO-ME-FO-SX-ME-A6-VE. Meaning that they would face starwolf twice.

TheRedFox8
The most canon route is Out of This Dimension. 'Nuff said.
