Gabe Newell teases 'Something with a 3 in it'

In what may be the most unhelpful tease ever, Valve boss Gabe Newell has assured fans that the company will announce "something with a three in it" at E3 2012. While this could be chalked up to Valve's adorable tendency to mess with its fans, it could also be part of another alternate reality game (ARG) that the company seems to be cooking up. PC Gamer reports that Gabe Newell reportedly replied to a 4chan e-mail with, "I don't suppose it would ease your wrath if I told you we're announcing all of your favorite things at E3 2012?" Deciding that wording was "confusing," he then said "Yes, we are announcing something with a three in it."

We're sure the cheeky comment recognized that nearly all of Valve's big franchises are set for a third installment, but it could be a bit more than mere trolling. PC Gamer suggests that various Valve activities lately are part of a new ARG. Wheatley's appearance this weekend on the Spike VGAs had visual information in the background, and the Doug_Rattmann Twitter account began streaming long strings of numbers on December 11. The crack hive mind known as the Internet will likely unearth any messages contained.

Newell's tease and the recent Half-Life 3 shirt could be hints at the ARG, misdirections, or just a bit of fun with an easily-riled fanbase. Valve previously released Portal 2 early through the Potato Sack ARG, which hid clues in various indie games.

If this is an ARG setting the stage for Valve's reveal, it will have to be an extremely slow burn to last all the way to June of 2012.

This is very good. Sadly, it could be anything. Anything besides Half-Life 3.

Oh, Valve, how I love you. :P

I think this is a new ARG, and Valve shouldn't have a problem letting it last until June. Could be Portal 3, but that is doubtful. 2 just came out and it didn't really have any sort of cliffhanger that would warrant a sequel so soon.

Dota 3… nope.

Counter-Strike 3? Uhh……….?

Day of Defeat… 3? No.

Team Fortress 3? I just don't see that happening. Really.

Left 4 Dead 3? We already have 1 and 2 and they're practically the same game. Haven't the missions for each been ported to the other? :/

(Although, out of all of those, I think L4D3 is the most likely)

And of course, Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2: Episode 3. When Gabe said "something with a three in it" I would imagine he meant Episode 3 over HL3.

They're just playing with us, but if I had to narrow it down I would say HL2:E3 or L4D3.

But of course, it could be an all new IP with a 3 in the name where an E would go. That would be a laugh.

Episode 3 is probably not going to happen, and they'll probably just make it into a full blown game, Half Life 3. Valve said Portal 2 was to be their last major game with exclusively single player content, so I see them using Half Life 3 to try and break this new water.

THAT ALL SAID I DON'T CARE REALLY JUST GIVE ME MORE OF THE ONE FREE MAN HGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGN.

oh, hell, they'll announce that after a drunken bet with Nintendo's entire legal team, Valve won the rights to produce Mario Tennis 3 or something.

and then Gabe Newell will feast on the tears of all of the Valve fans.

all of them.

For reference, a KNOWN AUTHENTIC Valve domain, steampowered.com:

   NS1.VALVESOFTWARE.COM 208.64.202.34

Interestingly, this does not give us a definitive. Both domains are registered through Network Solutions as private registrations, though the record it is quite clear that steampowered.com is owned by Valve.

The question is who is David Hassen? Anyone know if he is a Valve employee?

Of course, this is not enough to reject the null hypothesis of the domain being a fake, so I will still say it is a fake until further evidence arises.

I don't know about the shirt, the logo looks pretty fake because the 3 and Lambda are switched...plus knowing Valve, they would never f*ck up their logos.

For those of us who don't speak the hidden language of the Internet, mind explaining just WTF that code stuff you posted means?
